.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

Congrats on the kill! Was the shoulder the entry or the exit? What's the meat look like under the hide, thoughts on what kept it from taking out both lungs?

I'm still trying to wrap my mind and arms around the fragmenting smaller caliber bullets. I started using monos 30 years ago so I'm capable of bucking tradition when others say it can't work... Apologies for asking if it's too much.
From a guy with the handle 35 Whelen AI. Considering down sizing huh? Got a snicker out of it. I went from 270 Win . to 243 Win. 10 yrs ago and never looked back and will be going to 223 Rem. for deer.

That picture shows entry at shoulder. Sorry I was unclear, both lungs were hit, but by partial I just meant frontside of lungs. The bullet did punch through the opposing side of the rib cage, but I did not find the projectile (yet).

Currently he is hanging skin on, but I'll try to remember to take a photo of shoulder meat damage.
👍

At this point I don't have an inention on downsizing however don't need to defend the honor of the larger cartridges as much. It's proven the smaller ones work, it's proven the bigger ones work. Unless the guys shooting the smaller ones are conspiring with each other on the side and have pulled off a great disinformation caper.

Being from the camp of needing one shot on a game animal and the Whelen producing in spades, I've done my part and the Whelen has done its part and no changes coming soon.

I found 73g ELD-Ms for ~$0.86 per round (before shipping) at Gman Sport (www.gmansportingarms.com). Shipping there is pretty expensive, but no sales tax (at least for me) - bringing the total to just under $1.10 per round. Note - I have never purchased from there

Always wanted a 35 Whelen cause I hunted bear and deer in Wis.. never got one though... And thank God I never pulled the trigger on that 458 Win. mag I thought I wanted.
Went down from a 300 Win Mag to the Whelen AI. Whelen is a much more efficient cartridge and slightly less recoil. But definitely more recoil than an '06.

The newer smaller cartridges are an efficient design as well, that's an appealing factor.

Well I am taking my 20 inch barreled AR out to shoot a deer or a hog this evening. Wind is right for my stand. Using the 73 gr. ELDM loaded to 2.245 on top of 26.0 grains of LVR popped with a CCI 450. MV is 2840 fps. Hopefully get a shot and only pictures of one hit.

Thank you. Your post, and an email from the website with a 3% discount for items left in my cart (dropping the all-in price to $1.07), caused me to pull the trigger on 10 boxes.
Keep us updated on how the transaction goes with them. I almost bought from them but their shipping was substantially higher than others. As long as it’s a solid transaction I may end up biting the bullet so to speak

I didn't give up. I now have 1000 but the wife is starting to put the breaks on the firearms related spending 🤪
You have the bullet…

Put a delivery system together around it and take her shooting!

Teach her the system!

I've had the delivery mechanism around for a while. She has no interest in shooting/hunting except the cooking and eating meat part of it :)
