I have read and been following this thread for a while now, but still a novice on the whole bullet thing. Somebody dumb it down for me and tell me which bullet I should be looking at for whitetail sized game out of a suppressed sbr (barrel 10.5 or shorter), at shot distances inside 100-150 yards (Prob more like inside 50), with a mindset of more "knockdown power" or blood trail in mind (thicker, harder tracking woods). Have no problem at these distances of shooting a big buck in the neck if that's what needed for the knockdown power aspect but would like good performance on lung shot deer as my 7 year old son will be using it too. TIA

My NFA stamp came quick, so I put this 31oz SBR together these past few weeks. With the 8 inch barrel, my chrono says the 77tmk ammo I'm shooting is a bit over 2200fps at the muzzle (same ammo is about 2750fps in a 16 inch barrel). I'd bet you would be closer to 2400fps with a 10 inch barrel. Ammo is from stand1. Even with just the 8 inch barrel... the 2200fps keeps the impact velocity above 1800fps out to 270 yards, so it would be more than capable for your 150 yard range... and in a very compact and lightweight package.

(As shown, includes Scythe ti suppressor, Trijicon SRO 1moa Red Dot, 10 round Lancer L5 magazine)

Did you put up the specifics of that build in any threads?

That cute as a bugs ear, but I have doubts that I could shoot anything that light very well in the field. Show us some groups when you get to the range.

Its accurate enough for a 200 yard gun. Pic is of my 200 yard gong (9.5 inch) with a couple types of ammo (77tmk stand1 and some 62gr fmj). The limitation isn't how lightweight it is, it's the unmagnified red dot and my astigmatism... its pretty easy in the hand though, can hit my 2 and 3 inch flippers out to 75 yards standing/off hand.

There is a lot in the ultralight ultralight thread. But it's basically a BCA 5.56 7twist pencil barrel cut down at the gas journal, with a jag composites barrel nut, fostech magnesium upper with side milled out, solo300 bcg, ti firing pin, v7 ti grip screw, Hogue 15degree grip (skeletonized), nfa poly lpk, TA carbon fiber lower, diy carbon fiber tube handguard, diy carbon fiber stock (inserted into a cut rifle length buffertube).

I made the stock to be a quick detach, instead of running a folder.

Have you tried a micro dot and a magnifier? I am curious how that will work for someone with an astigmatism.

Otherwise, that is a dope little rig.
Based on his performance at 200 and his velocity, I don’t know if he needs a magnifier.

Agree that it’s a dope rig for a pack goat guy who wants to go light.

For this particular build, I was looking to see what was the lightest possible, but still functional centerfire I could build (and still be accurate out to at least 150). But yes, a micro like the 3x or 5x from PA would help. For my needs, if I wear my contacts (mostly just when I go hunting) the starburst effect through a regular red dot is a lot less than when I'm wearing my glasses like I was the other day... so it's manageable.

That's badass. Mine will not be that light but prob a good bit cheaper. Cool set up. What is everything?

I didn’t think he needed, I was just curious if he had tried it and how it worked out. I don’t know anyone with an astigmatism.

Sweet weapon! Out of curiosity, why are you going 1x on the optic? Is it weight savings?

I was surprised at how inexpensive (relatively) one could build an ultralight AR15, or in this case a "straight pull" or bolt action AR15.

$22 34/36 carbon tube for the handguard
$23 A2 buffertube
$30 farrowtech stock
$35 nfa polymer lpk
$49 Tennessee Arms CF lower
$56 bca barrel
$20 Hogue 15degree grip
$45 jag composites barrel nut
$329 solo300 upper/bcg
_______
$609 would get you under 2.5lbs easy.

I shaved a couple more ounces with mine building my own stock with 23/25 carbon tube and a carbon fiber 90 and some 3d printing.

I also shaved a couple more ounces with a magnesium upper instead of the aluminum one (but does require some milling out for the slot for the side charger handle)

You could probably save a bit of $$$ using a cheap aluminum stripped upper (again, you would need to mill out the side slot) and an aluminum bcg you could chop.

I also spent $150 to have my gunsmith cut/thread the barrel down to 8 inches. Otherwise, you would want to plug the gas port if you kept the barrel at 16 inches.

I shaved a bit more with a ti grip screw and a ti firing pin. But those grams cost a few more $$.

It's purpose built. As it is intended for just out to 200 or so, a simple red dot is lightest and easiest for me (and the kids) to use.

So... that is my "sub 3lb" setup (2.75lbs including suppressor, optic, and mag)

My "sub 4lb" setup will have an swfa ultralight 2.5-10x32 (it will weigh about 3.5lbs including suppressor, optic, arca rail, and mag). When I've had that setup in the past, I've found it suitable out to about 350-400 yards using the bdc for holdovers (1-1.5moa). This one is in the works, just trying to find the best 10-12 inch portless barrel option. I've also considered a PA Microprism 5x for this build, as it would shave about 3-4 ounces off of the weight of the SWFA including mount.

My "sub 5lb" bolt action ar15 setup wears an nxs-2.5-10x42mm. With the 16 inch barrel and a dialing scope, we can hit the 715 yard gong as long as I don't misjudge the wind. I consider it suitable for 400-500 yard hunting.

And luck??
Well I am trying to get a shot at a ten point that shows up on the cameras but he hasn't shown up in daylight since the rut wound down. Pretty quick it will be the late spike and doe season only and I will not have to worry about firing a shot scaring him off. Plus the winter wheat is coming up in all the fields changing deer travel patterns and bedding areas. Late season blues. But I had a nice sit. the local bird life loves my generosity. Especially the Cardinals.

Very cool, hope you catch up with him!
