.223, 6mm, and 6.5 failures on big game

My buddies 9 year old son did that with a 223. White poof and a lot of tracking with no deer. Their remedy was to try a 300wm for next season
Oof, poor kid. If that was my buddy I would probably bug him to the point of straining the friendship to look at the .223, 6mm, etc threads and try to convince him to not screw up his kid's shooting experience.

Yup. Nothing will improve a 10 yr olds success on deer like upping the Whallop Factor.

Can you expound on this a bit more? I am reading it to say that anything smaller than 6mm-.25 cal is not proven on deer. Is that what you are saying?
No. 6mm sucks, not .25. You can find data showing kills attempted and deer recovered for the various calibers. 6mm is the worst. LIterally. .25 works as well as anything assuming traditional shot placement and bullets.

If, however, you are a good shot you can kill a deer with just about anything. I would argue that .223 and .243 are equivalent, excepting recoil in a light rifle. I've not seen any data to back that up, tho.

Huh?
I'm afraid to ask but where is this "data" on calibers vs killing ability your talking about located?
I think you'll find a LOT of evidence that doesn't agree with your opinion if you spend any time looking

Sounds like some bad juju going on here.

Downright laughable, and that's being nice about it.
