22 ARC

Well I looked at the Hammer's. Bit pricey for me at $54. for 50.
75yds 70gr CX factory at 2600 out of the 12”. He was quartering to me hard. Put it just behind his head and it went in the neck and through him long ways and didn’t exit. He dropped on the spot and never moved.

I am interested in testing some of the new Mono's. Factory load is too easy. Looking at some Maker bullets.

Monos are pricey. That’s why I shoot factory 75eldm and leave it zeroed for that. Then pretty much any slightly lighter copper load I use will be ~1/2” higher poi at 100yds for pigs. If I only shoot 30-40 pigs a year that’s less than $40. All depends on how you use them. But you’re right the factory 70cx is to easy I bought 300rds of it last year just for hunting. I just like to tinker and the hammer absolutes and HBCs shoot well with little effort and get impressive velocity. Also it’s nice to be able to shoot pigs from whatever angle with monos and get good penetration to anchor them. Because half my shots are in thick brush through small windows with very little of the animal exposed.

Current load workups in my 16" Faxon barreled gas gun. These are 1/2 grain down from very minor shiny spots on the case head. All were tested for accuracy. Make sure and do your own workups from two grains lower than charges listed. All shoot better than MOA for three shots. The 88 gr. ELDM is my barrels favorite bullet. Three tightly touching. At any rate;

75 gr. Gold Dot/Fusion 27.5 grains of SMP 763 military pulldown powder, CCI #41 primer and Starline brass. 2640 fps
80 gr. ELDM 28.1 grs. of BLC2 same primer and brass. 2740 fps
75 gr. Gold Dot 29.0 Lvr same primer and brass. 2820 fps
88 gr. ELDM 27.5 Lvr. same primer and brass 2560 fps

Point of impact.
88 gr. ELDM 2.8" high centered
75 gr. Gold Dot 2" high centered
80 gr. ELDM 1" high centered.
75 gr. Gold Dot using SMP 763 dead center

Can easily use all three with the same sight in. The Gold dot bullet using Lvr is the cannelured version. May do a jug test on it to see if the cannelure changes anything. I will as soon as I shoot all the 80's loaded up with BLC2 test that bullet with Lvr. Lvr being Leverevolution.

I finally had the right combination of fun tickets and product availability so I brought home a RAP Gen 2 in 22 ARC to test out. Pulled the stock spacer out and it fits my wife just right. I'll get it scoped and sighted in this week. Howa Mini Actions in 22arc are becoming easier to find so I'll order one of those too.

I'm hoping the 75 ELDM are the ticket for this gun. They are priced right, the 1800 fps threshold is further than my wife would ever shoot at all elevations, and there is a sub 1 mph wind call between the 75, 80, and 88 loaded ammo using box velocities. At 550 yards using box velocities, each round has a sub 1 inch difference in wind call and that wind call is is 6.5 to 7.5 inches less than a 223 with the 77tmk. This is all currently theoretically since I haven't shot the gun over my Garmin yet but gives me the potential benefits of the cartridge. The 80's have similar wind and velocity threshold as the 75's. The 88's are at 1800 about 50 yards sooner and only a 0.5 mph wind better than the 75's. All this given, they are all super close and the bullet that is the most accurate and has the best wound profile will be used.

I’ll agree on the 75’s.
If they’re at 2900 and continue to group well, that’s my bullet in this rifle.

We got to shoot the 22 ARC today in between dropping the boy off at his ball game and the start of the game. My wife shot 1 for a sighter and 3 for a group. Had a 1.2 inch group but she was cold and not comfortable. The 5th shoot she shot the 250 yard steel and hit it. She was happy and looks forward to shooting it. First 5 shots had a velocity of 2995 fps. I took that and plugged it into Shooter and used the dope to shoot the 490 yard steel in a 12 mph wind. Not too bad for the first 6 shots out of the rifle.

Edit: This was with the Factory Hornady Black 75 ELDM. My wife was surprised at "how fast the bullet got to the target..." 🤪

20” barrel? Thanks.

What have your "on game" experiences been with the 88gr eldm?

I am using a 20" barrel, threaded and suppressed. 88gr ELDM factory ammo. 2,723 fps average MV. I have not confirmed the ballistics output on paper yet but look forward to it as it is showing 1,807 fps at 600 yards. 1,849 fps at 570 fps. I have heard that effective terminal performance is around the 1850 to 1800 fps...

Coming from the 77gr TMK, I was expecting similar damage but with the addition of a pass through more often than not. I only have 2 kills. (I would not count one of them as the other was a 20#, maybe, piglet. Pulled the insides out and DRT.)

I shot this sow at 82 yards with the 22 ARC listed above. She had a large count at the top of the entry shoulder. You actually saw the top of the should bone through the wound. We did not keep this hog to eat due to the nasty wound. Here are the pictures.

Entry is center of her left shoulder and exit was the crease of her right shoulder. Full pass through and annihilated the lungs and clipped the back of the heart. Surprisingly, there was less damage than the 77gr TMK. However, there was more than sufficient damage. After the shot, she walked 8 yds, stopped a moment then slowly trotted 18 more yards and fell over.

If I can expect reliable upset, this is going to become my go-to hunting cartridge/rifle for hunting hay fields. Very low recoil and fun!

Got the pictures to load!

I’m thinking a 22” may be my next do it all hunting rig. From doe to bull elk. Might sound dumb but with factory 88 ELD what can I expect realistically for yardage? 600 and in would be plenty.

This is the drop chart i have right now at 350' elevation. In the mountains, the air is less dense so you will get further yardage. I am running a 20" barrel. Wimd at 10mph. Ignore my beautiful digital penmanship...

At sea level, I am at 600 yards at 1800 fps. I have not run it for 5000' elevation but it will push your limits out. Just not sure by how much.

I also do not know the lower/minimal speed to get perfered terminal upset. I believe it is around 1800fps to 1850fps... I would love to know that answer... further testing on hogs will be required! Screenshot_20250526_181645_Shooter.jpg

That’s really helpful. I need to get my hands on one and get some data rollin. I wouldn’t mind a 16” as well, but I’m assuming that puts the limits closer to 450-500 but I haven’t ran any numbers.
