22 ARC or 6ARC

6mm ARC. Legal in all 50 states, light recoiling, cheap enough to shoot a lot.

I like the 6mm for the heavier bullet but the 22 is intriguing. I want minimal recoil as my wife doesn't really enjoy shooting. She won't draw a bull tag so it's most likely cow elk only and I don't put her in for elk out of UT. I have a 6CM she could use if the situation required it. Her max range is probably 400 yards. My bias just leans bigger but I don't know if it's necessary.

I think it really boils down to rifle choice. I would not want an ARC in a rifle that it really didn't fit in.

If they are dropping an ARC cartridge into something like a 308 length standard short action like a 700 clone, I would worry about it feeding 100% of the time.

6mm/22 ARC in a Howa 1500 Mini or something similar yeah do it. Will be a great light weight rifle.

A 6mm ARC Tikka would be stupid.

Are you building a gas gun? If it's for your wife i doubt she's going to be practicing a ton with it too right? Id lean 22 creed with 88s in a bolt gun.

Why are we worried about minimum caliber laws? I mean I’m sure the fines are small and they won’t take your elk.

I built a 11 pound 6mm BR for her to shoot, and she wouldn't even pull the trigger. Thought it recoiled too much.

I can't imagine any 6mm Creedmoor would kick hard. Does it have a silencer or muzzle brake?

Yeah I think it's just mental for her. I got a suppressed 6CM for her last year and she said it was ok to shoot but if I can get even less recoil it would make her feel better. That and I want the 6CM for myself.

Bolt gun. Looking at the Ruger as she doesn't need an expensive rifle. Just one that works

I’d lean towards 6mm because I already have a lot of 6mm components, and because it’s legal for big game in more states (including elk in my state).

Aside from those personal factors, I feel like the rounds so similar that my only other consideration would be which one becomes more commercially available

if it’s for your wife out to 400yards. Go 22arc and 88s. My gf is the same way only likes shooting 22s but will shoot the 22arc well and actually enjoy ringing steel with it. My 22arc ruger bolt gun shoots and feeds great. Was cheap, weighs less than 9lbs with scope, suppressor, and sling. Although 6ARC is fine to with a very small amount of increased recoil over the 22. I don’t think you could go wrong with either

It’s not about “expensive”. It’s about correct function and ease.

A 22 ARC or 6 ARC in a tikka is way better feed/function/feel than a Ruger American. She doesn’t like recoil, and it sounds like isn’t super into shooting- so getting a rifle that is flimsy, clunky and grabby in feeding isn’t the answer. 100/100 women greatly prefer cycling and using a Tikka to a RA- or basically any other action.

It is now legal in TN to use a .223, and it had been illegal for years.....and as far as a fine? I dont know about out there, but you legitimately break a game law here, harvesting big game in an illegal manner, they can pretty much take anything you have at the moment. Years back they caught a guy killing a deer in the Cumberland River in his boat, on purpose, watched him do it from the landing area. They took him, his truck, boat, everything.......and I really dont have a problem with that. If your going to be dumb ya got to be tough.

I am also curious to see what @mtwarden thinks on the subject. How often it's "considered" "asked about" etc.

I've been backcountry hunting since I could legally hunt growing up in the Sierras in the mid 90's. Never once did any fish and game or rangers ask us what cartridge we were hunting with. I've hunted and killed in nearly all of the western states since then as well, again, never once has "caliber" been asked about when we've been stopped to show licenses, tags, etc.

Is it something that just isn't asked or "checked"? What would happen if somebody killed an animal, had it in their pack or vehicle, and for some crazy reason a warden found out it was shot with a .224 instead of a .243?

Maybe I’m a weenie when it comes to following rules, but regardless of the likelihood of getting caught, I wouldn’t hunt with an illegal weapon. Just like I wouldn’t duck hunt without a plugged shotgun or use sabots in a muzzleloader in a state that didn’t allow them.

I feel like it’s a slippery slope to know the game laws and just selectively ignore the ones you feel shouldn’t apply to you.
