2026 Rokslide World Cup Thread

If soccer paid more than football or basketball, and carried the same social clout as football or basketball, you’d see much better athletes playing soccer instead of football or basketball.

The U.S. would win the World Cup with boring regularity.
Clout has nothing to do with it. I played both. I played soccer through college and coached for years. If soccer development programs/clubs/leagues in the USA were like they are in England and most of Europe the USA would win the World Cup. But, never with "boring regularity." Brazil doesn't win it with regularity and most Americans think they do. Hell Italy hasn't qualified the last 2 tournaments and they have won it 4 times. There is a lot more going on than the average American perceives.

This. People don't realize that we don't have an athletic talent problem in soccer, but a development problem.

Huge Arsenal fan here. Went to the Portugal v Congo game in Houston earlier this month. 10/10 atmosphere and overall experience, 5/10 gameplay. Also got to see Messi score at the Rapids v Miami game twice (one open play, one PK) earlier this year, then saw Ronaldo touch the ball a handful of times at the Portugal game. Been really fun to watch the games. France and Argentina seem to be the most dominant at this point in the tournament, followed by England. Spain and Portugal have been a disappointment. USA playing much better than expected.

I finally got a chance to watch France, it's no wonder they are one of the favorites....what an offense! That team rotates faster than any in the tournament and that has to make them tough to guard.

What should have been an relative easy win was Complicated by terrible refereeing. You either pull out cards or you don't. Its just about consistency. Bosnia spent the entire game committing tackle fouls with no cards. The red card may have been a red in game when the ref had established that aggressive contact and phyiscal play could result in a card but that was not what the ref spent 60 minutes doing. Playing through a game with a yellow card changes how you play. Its big deal . For a supposedly experienced referee that is about a 2/10 performance. The ref is supposed to ref the game not determine the outcome. Absolute poo. They need to send that guy home.

I’m not a soccer guy but it doesn’t matter if the US is thumb wrestling I’m going to cheer for them. First game I have ever watched. Looks like it should be crazy in Seattle on Monday.

Terrible red card on the USA tonight. Two guys playing for the ball with no malicious intent. Should have been a foul or at worst a yellow, but that was ridiculous. I would say that even if it was Bosnia that had committed the foul. Just absurd.

100%...I never played soccer...I played basically everything but and played collegiate hockey. My wife and her two sisters played soccer collegiately...my wife and her youngest sister had most of their schooling paid for because of it. My wife absolutely despises how soccer is organized in the U.S. Especially here in MN where hockey development is top in the country...she keeps saying and has mentioned to the head of a couple of the soccer associations here in MN that they need to go watch some of the better hockey associations and there youth development and take notes. There needs to be an emphasis more on local leagues and development not pick the top young kids and tie them into year round training for the club.

Hockey even here in MN is getting stupid with all year training and AAA teams etc. But seems like at least here at a young age kids need to choose between soccer only or something else.

Definitely terrible referee in the US v Bosnia game. Didn’t even card the Bosnia player when he deliberately ran by our goalie and pushed him down. You can’t touch the goalie like that, period. We won though, despite the refs bad calls! Good ol’ USA, we don’t give up and go harder when we have a disadvantage.

Youth sports in the US these days is about as bad as it can get, hockey being right there with the worst of them.

Good showing by the US, the next game is going to be rough without that scoring threat, hopefully we can put it together.

Yeah kind of sucks we had to play defense the rest of the game after that red card. Great game though, the sports bar we were at went wild after that second goal.
