2026 Idaho Controlled Hunts

I’ve been putting in for sheep in Washington for 25 years. They have a point system, hasn’t helped

1st year I have applied in Idaho ...... success for late rifle deer !!! Booyah. Thx Idaho. Turned my hunting season around.

FYI - I have always hated the guys who would say "first year and I drew this tag" ... Lucky Bastards. Haha. Now I kinda like them.

Drew unit 66a late rifle elk and a 73 mule deer tag.

I try to not get too serious or stressed out and like a good razzing. I too wait like a kid on Christmas for results, but am not surprised when Fish & Game-Claus delivers an unsuccessful lump of coal in my inbox.
However, IDFG pleasantly surprised me again this year.

My sons always draws all the tags, but I must have been living right because I got a 41 November mulie tag. It is always nice to have something to look forward to.

NO WAY! I know the random lottery isn't always a win, but at least the newest and youngest hunter has a chance at drawing. I live in CA which has a preference point system and there is no chance for the youngest hunters to ever draw a tag. Yeah they call it a modified preference point system with a VERY small amount of random tags, but the odds of drawing a random tag are the same odds as drawing a sheep tag, less than half of 1%. Point systems are the way that states discourage hunting to new hunters and point systems will be end of hunting.

They're equal for all applicants. Point systems are low odds for high point holders and zero odds for everyone else and it only gets worse with time.

Yep some of Idaho has harsh odds. But 1:100 or 1:1000 draw odds are pretty good for our youth.

In MT you can easily find draw odds that are 1:100,000 for new hunters and the is on gettingworse. It is crushing for our youth.

I can't stand points systems. The only problem they solve is revenue shortage for the state game agency.

Lots of good tags that are in the 10-20% range. I’d say that is pretty decent. I’ll let everyone else continue to apply for all the premium units, I’ve taken enough game off of general hunts to know that even if I draw a 2nd or 3rd tier controlled hunt I’ll find a way to have some success and if I never draw at least I have general hunts.

Was very happy to draw a unit 18 deer tag. Especially as this year ill be able to walk off my property to hunt.
