2025 Turkey harvest pics

Got a good one today. He was gobbling constantly on the roost and I was able to get within maybe 100 yards and sneak my decoys out into a field near where he was roosted. I found an absolutely perfect spot to tuck into the timber edge, between two trees with tall grass all around me. Just a picture perfect setup. I started some soft calls and he’d fire right back. I had hens about the same distance away but in a different tree that kept talking back to me. I figured his attention would be on them, but he flew down first and headed my way immediately. I could hear him drumming and walking in the timber behind me. He popped out 5 yards from me. He was too close to get my gun up so I had to wait for him to strut out and have his head behind his fan. He finally did and I shot him at maybe 10 yards. I shot him at 5:25am, so certainly one of the earliest birds I’ve ever shot. Beard was 11.5” and spurs 1 1/4”. Shot him with Federal #9 TSS, Franchi Affinity 20 gauge, Carlsons choke. Not like the loads mattered on this one with how close he was!

My first out of state turkey trip to hunt NY public land. Easiest turkey hunt I’ve ever had! 2 birds in 2 days! Both were struck up and called in mid to late morning. Gun used was a Remington 870 and load was Longbeard XR #5 Range was 10 and 35 yards respectively.

Congrats all! Sure is fun to chase turkeys in springtime. Snow rain or beautiful weather it's a great excuse to get out camping after a long winter.

Well, it's been 7 years!
Last bird I killed was in the fall of 2018.
Before the next turkey season opened that spring, I had shoulder replacement surgery. Doc says "No shooting for one year!"
Then, Oklahoma had a "pox" move through, wiping out a goodly portion of the turkey population! ☹️
Can't shoot and no birds! Bummer!

Things have turned around!

My set up, unbeknownst to me, was "UNDER" the roost!
I get the truck unloaded, tom's gobbling on the roost not 30 yards away! Yikes!
Go park the truck and hump it back to the blind!
Heck! Before I get in the blind, birds are flying down and gobbling!
Can't see this set up will do me any good.....but the birds don't leave. They're about 60 yards away, gobbling their heads off.
Hens come by not 15 feet away and work down the fence.
Suddenly, the toms are about 30 yards away! They're hot and gobble at every putt and cluck!
I finally get turned, get my shotgun out a port hole and pick a bird.
About that time, they gobble!
BANG!
The selected bird drops, flopping!
One of his mates runs over to peck and spur his fallen rival!
Sadly, Oklahoma is a one bird limit!

Not trophy class by any means!
16 pounds
5 inch beard
nubby spurs
...but after 7 years, I was ecstatic!

Been a fun spring so far
Mossberg SA-28 Turkey
Rogue TSS 9.5shot
Both these were killed around 30 yds

The 28g is my new favorite turkey gun
Don’t think I’ll ever tote around a 12g again

Please tell me you're working on that youngster keeping a "Hunting Journal"!
They don't have to rewrite "War & Peace". Just a few words about who was there and kinda what happened!

I started going hunting with my dad and grampa when I was 3 years old! That was 72 years ago! LOL!
It didn't dawn on me to keep a hunting journal until I was 53 (2003) years old and both my mentors were gone.
Grampa in 1972 and dad in 1981.
Many years of wonderful memories that have slipped into the past.

If I had just thought to keep a journal...!

Way to go!
Nice bird!

Finally got my boy one on the last weekend in TN. We went out on several hunts together this year and I'm super proud for him to get his first bird! I think he's officially hooked.

I can't say this enough! Help him start a hunting journal!
When you're old and grey and he's taking YOU hunting, you can go back and read your exploits!

BTW!
Congrats!
Nice bird!
