2025 Traditional Hunt Success Thread

Not really shot my trad bows much since my shoulder surgery...but hope to by end of season this year. Have had some good hunts with both longbow and recurves past 30+ years. Got a nice turkey couple years ago...but good luck to all of you.

Keep em sharp,

Ron

Nothing special but a little nanny goat from yesterday morning. My first animal with a trad bow since about November 2024. Bow is only 46# on my fingers and arrows are about 550gn. Shot was very steep quartering away and penetrated from the guts in front of the back leg and came out the front of the neck on the opposite side, caught on the fletches.

I have been shooting a compound off and since I was 11, so 29 years. I have always wanted to shoot a traditional bow, but to be honest I thought it was witchcraft. People always said you just pull back and be one with the arrow. My scientific mind cannot function that way. Fast forward to last November, my neighbor was shooting his Martin Savannah long bow in his back yard, and I asked if I could shoot it. It was righthanded and I was lefthanded. I shot a couple arrow and knew I wanted to try but did not want to spend a ton on money in case I couldn't figure it out.

Fast forward to Christmas morning my wife bought me a Black Hunter with 45 lbs. limbs. I told her the one I wanted after a month of research. The first time I pulled it back it felt like a was pulling 80 lbs. I measured them at my draw length to be 53 lbs.

In March, I flew out to RMS gear to work with Tom Clum Sr. and I worked with a solid group of men and one BA women during the Compton deal. I knew then I was over bowed and ordered 40 lbs. limbs. They turned out to be the ticket along with the training Tom helped me with. I also had a failed attempt at owning a 53 lbs. Wengerd Tahr. I sold it because it was just too much and loud. I have literally shot about every day unless I was away for a business thrip. I have shot every 3D shoot that I could to get ready for this deer season.

My 7 year old son is shooting a Gensis Micro bow instinctive as well and has tagged along. He was showing some interest in hunting, so I decided to book a trip to OK to chase pigs. I have been on 4 pig hunts prior and knew this would be an action-packed hunt.

We just got back last night after a long weekend chasing pigs and we got it done. Tried sitting at feeders and they didn't come in. I assume the amount of acorns dropping had something to do with it. So we decided to spot and stalk and I was able to put a good broadside shot on him at 18 years. It was a complete pass through with a 3 blade VPA head. I was pumped but knew I need to trail him. This hide easy. The last shot was through his left shoulder blade through his body and out the right rear side. That finished him.

My son is hooked, and I got my first recurve kill. It's wild what a $100 bow with a good string, good tunned arrows, and a good broad head can do.

With all that said I got hooked pretty easy and sold all my compound stuff and ordered a PMA with carbon limbs and G10 riser back in July. I am hoping to get a shot on a legal deer here in MO and my season will be complete.

Opening week of archery found me in my familiar spot on the creek. I always sit on one or another little feeder gully that drops down into the creek bottom depending on the wind and whether it’s morning or evening. I’ve killed 3 deer the last 4 years from one of these spots from the ground, with one of my recurves or longbow, during the first week of season.

Early in the evening I’d had a big nanny doe come by at 16-18 yards but offer no shot. I sat waiting for dark hoping she’d come back before I lost the light. With 10 minutes of shooting time left I caught movement from the direction she’d headed. After a couple half draws trying to pick a hole through the brush she finally paused in an opening about 20 yards away. It was a hard quartered away angle so I held for the last rib and slipped the string.

I heard the arrow land with a THUG sound and saw the deer hunch up and walk over a little rise. In less than 10 seconds I heard a crash and a wheeze so I was confident as I walked to the truck to get a light.

A quick look around when I returned showed a glowing eye and white belly about 10 yards from where she was at the shot. Unfortunately the eye and belly belonged to a little yearling. In the bad light and my excitement I didn’t realize that it wasn’t the big doe. Oh well, antlerless is antlerless and we have tons of deer and a liberal limit. Should eat good.
