2025 NRL Hunter

So I’ve shot 3 NRL events now, lot of tripod shooting. I’m really struggling with it getting my wobble zone to where I can consistently hit targets at range. I have a leofoto SA 324 with the mx40 head.. are the higher end tripods just really that much better? The top shooters in my squads just don’t seem to have trouble with it. I’m shooting clipped in to my arca rail, is a tac table much better?

I usually shoot off a Leofoto 404 with an anvil 30 on it. I have a 324 CLX and it is way more wobbly than the 404. I think the ideal tripod would be the Leofoto 362 inverted or the PRSTF inverted 2 section which is basically a Leofoto 402 inverted. The fat boy, RRS and two vets inverted tripods are all great too

IMO keep shooting clipped in, body position behind the gun can effect wobble a lot, just being bladed one way or the other can effect wobble. Also height, imo I can always get my body lower to get behind the gun, setting it up to high esp standing can cause issues.

I like clipping in just forward of balance point, it puts my arm at the right length, I’ll take my off hand and grab the mx40 and run my thumb on top the qd lever almost like a thumb shelf. I run the tension lever with my middle finger and ring finger, I never really clamp it tight.

Another thing to try set the rifle up clipped in and on target. Get your shoulder in position see what wobble does, once stable put your head in position see if the wobble gets worse and adjust pressure, then grab the gun with shooting and then support hands. Basically trying to isolate what part of your body is causing the wobble.

I run a Leofoto 323 and a mx40, is it holding me back, maybe, is there better yeah, but I make it work and I’m very confident shooting off it sitting and standing. Kneeling is my weak point mainly bs the legs are thin. I’ll upgrade before the finale and it’ll be a 36-40mm first leg tripod.

I've got three RRS and two PRSTF tripods and the RRS are more stable but it's only by a small amount. You won't see enough to make a difference for the price.

The 4 series Leofoto will be more stable than the 3. They are just bigger and mass cannot be discounted.

I feel like I’ve tried so many things to get stable practicing on a flat range and just in my living room with scaled 2 moa target and i just suck with it. There’s some pretty significant flex in the legs especially once you get a section extended

Yeah those legs get pretty small I glanced over the 324 part. I’d try to keep that thing as low as possible. I use a 325/Revic for hunting and it pretty wobbly standing, but sitting kneeling is plenty.

Yeah jumping to a thicker leg 2-3 section will get you more stability

I've got a Leofoto SA-364, and have shot off of a few RRS tripods. One big thing I noticed was that the splay angle for the Leofoto is less than the RRS. So when deployed for standing shots, the RRS felt noticeably more stable when compared to the Leofoto when set up at the same height. I think Leofoto uses a 23 degree angle and RRS uses 25 degrees.

I'm not sure if other manufacturers use different angles, but it was something I noticed. The more stable legs won't fix poor fundamentals, it was just that I noticed my wobble got a little smaller on the RRS tripod. It just told me I needed to practice more.

For sure if I can get to a sitting position I do okay and the targets have been generously sized but there was a lot of vital plates yesterday and really showed how much I struggle with it.

It’s very easy to torque your rifle clipped in. I prefer a table with a sand schmedium.

The big tripods and a 9 pound sand schmedium on nice aluminum tac table, zero wobble should be attainable

With a lesser tripod the weight of the bag seems to make it more stable.

Interesting. I really struggled shooting off my tripod maybe I'll try and heavier bag

@realunlucky

This is what I prefer. This photo is a fairly awkward position that I rushed getting rover that log I thought I could directly off of.

The bag to me is easier to make a torque free position, it’s easier to spot shots from, and faster to transition. Shooting off a front bag takes some technique but once you understand the premise and have suitable equipment it’s very easy.

What tac table are you using? I assume the bag isn't attached to the table and you just throw it on as needed?

Got pretty humbled over the weekend trying to shoot with my bag directly on the tripod head.

That one is a mod dos, with some talon grip tape strips on it to hang onto the bag. I had a cheap heavy one but wanted to try the mod dos for hunting along with match use, it hasn’t disappointed. Shot an antelope off it last fall.

Lots of options out there, the only ones I found sturdy enough for match use have been metal.

I had this one covered it in athletic tape and it worked great but was heavy.

I too struggle to shoot clipped into a tripod. Maybe just cuz I don’t practice it enough, but my go to tripod techniques are as follows.
1. Don’t shoot off a tripod
2. Still don’t shoot off a tripod
3. If I absolutely have to, I do it like this. No head, no tac table just bag plopped right on top of the legs. I’ve thought about adding a tac table but the way I carry my tripod to stages I think it may interfere with my ability to deploy it quickly or without smacking myself in the face.

It looks like your 324 has a smaller apex which may make it a little tougher and it looks short so if you’re not shooting seated it may not be as stable. Inverted tripods are the way to go for nrlhunter imo if you can swing it.

I used to always just throw my bag over the apex like Juan. Recently added an SRS tac table, I drilled and tapped it for 3/8-16 so I could attach it directly to my tripod with no head. I've found that the bag grabs and settles the gun a lot better that way. I just run a carabiner through one of the holes in the tac table and clip that to my shoulder strap. +1 for inverted two section tripods.

I struggled a lot with shooting from a tripod for a long time but I have it semi figured out😂.

Inverted tripod is huge for me, super stable.
Bag on a tac table or straight over the apex.

We have the first two steps the same lol. At the Hunter games event this weekend, well over half of the shots were off tripod. I was still able to crack the top 3 somehow but left a lot of points out there

At the venue @WoolyBugger is mentioning there seems always be a couple stages with 1 target/4 positions where getting the right height to hit the window is a primary challenge to me at least. I figured i'd like off a bag more but find being clipped in to be helpful moving from flag to flag and not having to keep my bag from falling off the tripod with all the movement. Pretty common to just pick up the gun clipped in and carry it 10' to the next shooting position. Just sucks if you're clipped in and need to make significant adjustments to tripod legs.

Should be able to compare a Leofoto 282 CMX (shorter version) with MA30 to my RRS 24L here soon for stability. The RRS definitely feels stiffer.
