Been thinking about going OTC in Montana for a few years, but I really have the itch. I know it is super unlikely to bag one but I just want to hunt. Anyone want to join me as a hunting buddy? I am open to where to go. I am 39, in reasonable shape, one hell of a navigator and looking for high country adventure. I will rough it alone if I have to, wouldn't be the first time for non-resident solo adventure into the back country, but I pays to have someone watching your back. Hit me back.

I’m sure you’re a great guy, but your post reads like something on a dating site.

I’ve done the UL’s by myself and with friends - good luck and God’s speed. The last time I was in the UL’s was ‘23 and it was crazy crowded. Saw a ton of people.

I hear you, figured it was worth a try before going it solo

Honestly, you probably won’t get a partner that has experience in there. That then leads to the situation where there’s two new guys in an area that’s held close to the chest by most. If you run into anyone at a trailhead or in the mountains, it’s doubtful you are going to get much help, tips or advice given to a couple new dudes.

Being solo makes a significant difference in someone’s view of you out there. You might end up making friends or getting advice that ends up being super helpful.

I doubt anyone will want to go period, just a hail mary on my end. Probably more to make it look like I am not totally insane to my wife. My main concern is having someone near in case of a grizzly situation. Most of the attacks I have read about that 2nd person really came in handy. My biggest hurdle would be finding somewhere with few people. I just wouldn't want to crowd or be crowded by people in what is such a rugged area. Almost hard to imagine that, but when you make these OTC I guess that i what you get.

Can anyone recommend areas to avoid based on tons of people? I want to be away from people. I heard the south side is pretty crowded, so I am assuming to stay away from access from the 212 side at the Montana/Wyoming border.

No one that knows anything is going to hand out specific info to a dude on the Internet. If you want to go, then definitely make it happen. But you have to understand that these hunts are for the adventurous types.... you have to be okay with going in and figuring it out for yourself. I probably have 50ish days of hunting or serious scouting in these units, all solo, and am slowly putting the pieces together. Time spent in those mountains and learning the country/ animals are the fun and rewarding parts...

I'm waaay more concerned with snapping a leg in a boulder field than I am about bears. They're around, but I certainly wouldn't let them deter you. Good luck whatever you decide
