2025 Blacktail Bucks

I had a plan to just cover a bunch of ground today, knowing sitting in a spot and glassing wasn’t an option with the weather, or glassing at all. Plan was to walk in just shy of 5 miles to some lower lying ground hoping to get out of some of the wind and sneak around cuts and still hunt some timber and hunt a couple miles further if needed

I was feeling like it was pretty pointless early on, wind was blowing so hard I couldn’t even look into the wind and rain, trying to keep my head down so water wasn’t pouring into my hood, but it was pointless, I was soaked very early on

I was trying to stick it out hoping the wind would let up and decided to go a direction I haven’t in a couple years and was glad I did, I found a really cool spot that is off the beaten path. A little way into that area I picked up a track that looked pretty good and since it was visible at all in that weather, I knew it wasn’t very old, so I followed it a ways and the wind started getting sketchy for the direction he was going (I could see at least one doe track too with him)

I decided to treat it like it was fresh and went up over the ridge, went to the bottom and started following it back up towards where I had seen the sign, I could see they didn’t get ahead of me, but I didn’t know if they kept going on their direction or veered off, but it was the best thing going

About half way back to where I hopped over the ridge I have a doe pop out in front of me and instantly looks behind her so I got my rifle off my pack and tucked into the ridge, she was only 30yds, she fed out in front of me and then the buck popped out behind her, but it was an average 3pt and not what I was looking for, they ended up point blank before knowing I existed, cool encounter and got the skunk off for the morning, this was probably 10am just after the wind slowed down.

I decided to head back to where I started and see if anything came out with the weather change, still dumping rain, but way more pleasant weather. I walked everything back out, checked every ridge and bench, no new sign. I climbed back up trying to plan a good route back to give me a chance to find a buck, there was one last little corner up by the timber line that I was going to look at again, and here is a white face looking at me at just over 100yds, I knew it was a buck, but I didn’t think it was much of one, I couldn’t see any antlers. Didn’t want to get my binos out and get them wet for a dink, but the face sure was white, so I decided to put glass on him before getting any closer and watch him bounce off, and as soon as I got my binos on him, I was very surprised to see a pretty heavy frame and nice dark antlers, I can’t believe I almost just blew that deer out before even looking.

I didn’t know exactly what he was, but I could tell by his frame that I liked him, so I dropped my pack, stood it up and sent a 77tmk, heard it hit him. He bounced off a couple bounds and stopped behind a little fir looking at me, and still looked pretty alert, with his head and neck out and all I could see. In these couple seconds my scope got really wet, and I wanted to shoot him in the neck, but I couldn’t see it through the rained out scope, all I could see was his white nose, so i put the crosshairs right above that and he was gone when the smoke cleared.

I walked over there and he was dead right there, but I trashed the skull😂 oh well, but it is a shame demolishing the skull cap of such a pretty buck, but I will figure something out. Had I held off a couple seconds, he would have tipped over in front of me, that first shot wrecked him

All in all, miserably long wet day, but I’m glad I stayed and stuck it out

Wish there were extensive gated road systems that were worth hunting and open to the public around my neck of the woods. All my good spots are 1-2 mile hikes, it'd be cool to get farther back than that. I don't like spots you can drive up to. Where's the adventure in that

I agree. Walk in that doesn’t have a bunch of people that know someone that get keys. It’s flustering to walk or ride my bike and see ten rigs.

it was a days work in today’s weather good on ya, I had similar ideas and Ambitions but could only find does

The search continues, congrats you earned that one today just given the conditions

I get that. This year the struggle has been logging, there are 3 different operations going where I have been spending a lot of time, and a pile of traffic, and a lot of them are absolutely hunting when they can, I have seen a few of them stop and get out a tripod and start glassing

The couple spots/bucks I planned on hunting this year were out of play pretty early with active logging, cutting the timber that they bedded in… deer will adapt but i couldn’t go look where they ended up because there was no back way in, and I’m not going to piss those guys off trying to get through where they are working… but I very much agree, at least I have some options to get a long way behind gates and mostly get out of human activity most of the time, I struggled finding similar spots on the south coast, it felt like people could almost drive anywhere (and did) there were a lot more deer down there and better age class, but I still always liked hunting here more, because I have tons of options to not deal with people road hunting. I’m more concerned with the process than the outcome, I enjoy certain types of hunting more than others, and standards are relative to current realities

With lots of human activity, I gravitated to hunting the timber out of sight of the roads, and that actually was pretty productive, but I don’t enjoy it as much as watching a cut all by myself knowing I’m not going to have someone drive by me

Lots of great bucks in this thread!

Yesterday we put some miles on our boots and glassed a ton of country. Between shooting light and 10am we glassed around 18 deer with the only bucks being micro spikes. Usually starting the 3rd week of October in that area the bucks will be chasing. Hopefully this cold front and rain turns the rut on.

After frustratingly little deer movement while trying to help my wife find a buck yesterday, I took my other daughter hunting this morning. This is her first season and she’s been doing great but hasn’t had any opportunities yet. We met up with a good friend of mine who sacrificed a day of hunting with his daughters to help.

Right away this morning we get on a small, goofy 2x1 and play cat and mouse for a good 10-15 minutes. We were within 30 yards for quite a while but the lighting was poor and he was mostly screened by slash. Eventually he tired of the game and left us standing in the rain. I could tell she was disheartened so I told her things happen for a reason. I was saying it as much to reassure myself.

We caught a glimpse of a nicer buck but he was jumpy and didn’t hang around. A short while later we see a dandy buck with a doe but he knew the game and moved off before my daughter could get set up.

We checked a few other areas and found quite a few does, but no bucks. We eventually ended up on the edge of a sizable opening in the timber. It was fairly flat and it appeared to be empty. As we made our way across a great buck materialized about 60 yards in front of us. The only explanation I can come up with is he was bedded in a little swale and stood as we approached. I threw out the tripod and helped my daughter get set up. The buck was quartered sharply away so I instructed her on shot placement and crossed my fingers. When the rifle cracked he buckled and dropped in his tracks. She made a great shot on what appeared to be a nice 3 point. After hugs and hollers and high fives we made our way up to it what turned out to be a great 4 point! This is her first critter of any kind and the level of excitement was like nothing I’ve ever seen!

This has been the best season I’ve ever had! Both of my girls got their first bucks. I’m so proud of both of them.

Congratulations to your girls!!! But also congrats to you. When my wife shot her first buck it made me realize why dad was always so much more excited if I got one then him. Now watching my boys, there just isn’t anything like it. And to get a buck of that caliber!!!!! Daggum! I think I’ve made fun of to many people, karma won’t allow me to get one of those!

Thank you so much! You’re 100% correct, it’s definitely more exciting and rewarding than I ever imagined. And to see their excitement just elevates the whole experience to a different level.

This is awesome! My daughter just harvested her 10th blacktail buck and it’s the best feeling ever when she is successful. I love seeing these kids doing what we all love to do. Grow the passion. Nice work!!

Thank you! And congrats to you and your daughter! That’s awesome and it fills me with hope.

I shot this buck with an arrow opening morning 3 years ago on the farm and my buddy just blasted him with a rifle this weekend. I shot at him frontal but he whirled and the arrow cut across the front of his chest nearly broadside and buried in the far side shoulder blade. I kept chasing him the whole season, almost finishing him off a couple times. He was running around chasing does without much trouble that season, just a small limp. I shot another arrow at him on the evening of the last day but he turned to run away right as I was releasing and I only shaved some hair off his side.

I figured he continued to survive but I never was sure if I saw him again after that season. He was 202.6 lbs (whole). If I remember right he was a decent 3 point in 2022, so I imagine he's at least 6.5 years old now.
