My wife drew a cow tag and we thought it could be a good opportunity to take our 2 girls out, ages 6 and 9. Needless to say it was a great success and they got to see how good of a shot mom is. They did much better than we could have hoped with big smiles on their face dang near the whole time, we did just over 3 miles in total with a fair bit of elevation loss in some rough country. Got it done the first morning but spent a couple days camped out in a special place I’ve camped at since I was a kid. The highlight of the season for sure, God is good.

October 5th, opening day! My first elk! 5x5 with broken 6th. My first drawing. I drew unit 34 New Mexico special mobility impaired hunt, Oct 5-9, 2024. We had a 4x4 and a cow inside 50 yds at first light. This bull came in bugling just before sunset with his tips shining in the sun. DL'd @ 14Oyds and 40 ft above me. Ran 50 yds before dying. 7mm Rem mag. 160 grain NAB's with 65.5 grains H-4831 SC. CAUTION: Heavy max load I worked up to. .375 MOA. Complete pass through. Bedded Rem 700 BDL. Leupold scope. Shoots ragged holes. I am hooked!

I seriously love the huge whale tail 5’s! That’s a very cool bull, I’m a little jealous of that one

I never draw anything! Except this elk tag. But I piggy back off my buddy who draws everything (we all know that guy!). Well he couldn’t go because he got a new job and couldn’t get the time off so I decided to drive 3000 miles to Elk Land! From Kenai, AK to Idaho. I envisioned walking around in the mountains with my dog and fiancé hunting elk. Seems a bit crazy, but I know guys who sheep hunt with their dogs all the time. Being a red heeler, he sorta looks likes a coyote so I made him wear an orange pack. Made him carry his own food and water for the day and pack my kill bottle of whiskey! People on the trail loved him.

Found him the day before opener. Finally connected on him on day 5 at 1:30 in the afternoon! Just out for a mid day snack in the shade on the backside of all these horse trails. 591 yard shot and dropped him in his tracks. High shoulder shot. (Hells Canyon 7mm Rem Mag, Berger 168 VLD, 69.1 gr of H1000, 2950 at the muzzle, for you shooting enthusiast’s).
