Same setup for the last 4-5 years, prime rival shooting 100 gn. Wacems at 72.5 yards.
The goal is to keep it inside the vital ring which is a little big for this particular target In my opinion.
The only gear change for this year is the ultraview button release and I got one of these Advanced Outdoor Technology release holders that will hopefully prevent the loss of any more releases

This is the view from my shooting spot

Day 1
To be honest today was quite different than I normally shoot just because I rushed to get in on time. So I shot in my workout clothes drenched in sweat, as I just finished a core workout with my wife. About 9:15 am with the sun at my back.

7c5bc8381fa445197728c64756a0c83d.jpg

Day 2
Shot at 7:45 am. Dead calm sun at my back 43 degrees. It was all I could do to but my bow away and not shoot a second arrow, I’m just dying to put one in the center!
023f75dcdb0697c252914858098f56e4.jpg

Day 3
Shot at 6:00 p.m. a little breezy 68 degrees.
Didn’t realize the target was leaning forward until I walked up to it (not that it changed anything)
6d79647293a12f389361af13f1a57108.jpg

Day 4
Tonight I shot at 8:15p.m. 57. Degrees. The sun had set and it was calm. I felt some pressure from local traffic because I’m about 20’ off a road where I’m shooting from, but the shot felt great and the arrow hit where I hoped all 5 shots would be. But I guess that’s the point of this excercise, right?
(Side thought….sometimes I wonder if all the shots feel the same, then instantly when I see the impact my brain tells me it felt great or something was a little off?)

Day 5
I wasn’t able to get home during daylight hours yesterday so day 5 is two days after my best shot yet, shot was around 6:20 pm, overcast but not too windy and 54 degrees.
Had my kids stand safely behind me while I shot and as soon as I said “let’s go look” my 6 yr. old sprinted to the target. I yelled “don’t touch the arrow” as I could see him trying to pull it out. Not sure if your kids listen as well as mine but he had the arrow in his hands before I could get there! I explained to him what he’d done and why I couldn’t just do it again, so he just shoved it back in saying “it was right here, it was just in a farther” I believe he is pretty accurate, so that’s the picture I will post.
If this disqualifies me, or you’d like me to reshoot this arrow just let me know.

MER 60 yards (increased from 53 last year)
Kill zone is the 7" center circle

Mathews No Cam
Axcel Armortech fixed 5 pin
QAD Ultrarest
10"/8" front/back bars
Easton Axis
4 fletch TAC driver 2.25"
75 gr brass HIT
QAD Exodus

Day 1: Missed low and right. Fixed heads really planed at this distance.

IMG_2667.jpg

Day 2: Battling cold and winds the past few days. Finally caught a break enough from the 40mph gusts to shoot. Just a hair high - one of the blades barely touched the kill zone but having to call it a miss.

IMG_2668.jpg

Day 3: Finally a break in the weather with sun and light wind. Clean miss again. Grouped in with my day 1 shot

IMG_2674.jpg

Day 4: Perfect day - sun and no wind, cool temps. Release felt perfect and shot broke clean and the hit reflects that. Finally on the board for this challenge

IMG_2675.jpg

Day 5: Another great evening with no wind. Finally settled in and executed a great shot. Felt great on the release and arrow hit its mark. Wraps me up at 2/5 for the challenge. Rough start but good finish.

I'm back for another go at the Cold Bow Challenge. MER of 70 this year with field points trying to keep it in the faded green circle on the Reinhart 18-1

Equipment specs
Hoyt Axius ultra 28.5 65 lb draw
hamskea trinity rest
5 pin black gold slider
Cutter stabilizer
Tight spot 5 arrow
Arrow Black eagle rampage 300 spine 3 fletch aae max stealth vanes 125 grain point total arrow weight 450

Day one 63 sunny light variable breeze
20230429_093020.jpg

Day 2 65 sunny ligh wind. My dot fell off overnight so I took the shot without it
20230430_093145.jpg
Day 3 calm 65 evening shot this time. The called vital zone of "in" the green puts this one out barely.
20230501_190150.jpg
I apparently didn't save my day 4 pic to the post correctly. Day 4 80 degrees just out again.
20230503_192055.jpg
Day 5 60 10mph left to right wind.
20230505_140704.jpg
2/5 this year missing the other 3 shots by a combined total of only a couple inches. Definitely pushing my abilities and really shoulda called bigger vitals. Love this challenge and appreciate rokslid and the sponsors for doing it.

Day 1 of this years challenge!

Target is this with the vitals being the square, about 9” x 9”

IMG_2717.jpeg

Bow is the same I’ve had for a few years now. Bowtech RealmX, 70# at 28”, vaportrail rest, TS quiver and option sight.
Arrows are 5mm axis 300 with wraps and Q2i fletches. Broadhead is a Sevr 100 gr 1.5 and I have IW footers. My MER this year is 60 yds.

IMG_2720.jpeg
IMG_2719.jpeg

Day #1. Calm, sunny, 55 degrees

IMG_2718.jpeg

Day #2. Early morning calm 48 degrees

IMG_2723.jpeg

Day #3, afternoon 60 degrees slight wind left to right. Pulled shot a bit high on the release.

IMG_2726.jpeg

Day #4 62 degrees partly sunny wind from left to right. Shot drifted with the wind a bit, should have held a little left. Still hit vitals but in the right edge.

IMG_2727.jpeg

Day #5, 65 degrees calm and overcast. Didn’t get the best release, pulled shot a little low but still in the vitals.

First year doing this! Avid compound archer but have only been shooting a recurve for about 8 months now. It’s addicting and challenging!

Maximum effective range: 25 yards with traditional bow

Kill zone: 7” hexagon

1972 Bear Kodiak Hunter

#46 pound draw at 27” draw length

Easton axis 500 spine traditional arrows

75 grin steel half out

200 grain iron will broadheads

TAW= 586 grains

Shooting with a custom made leather tab.

Weather: 55 degrees. Little to no wind. Wet and dreary outside.

Shot was a little high. Still on the edge of hexagon. Left and right was good though.

4ab6dea7c98c60e32e03516c40cf621a.jpg

Day 2:

Shot was left. Elevation was great. Sun just peaked through and it was 52 degrees. No wind.

99b2ba7f1fc7b9a4e8f7bf31a6ba2f29.jpg

Day 3:

Shot was just a smidge right. Elevation was good. 58 degrees with no wind. Just started misting out when I took the shot.

1d38955466bb69359d9296e35a7cd3c4.jpg

Day 4:

Shot was almost center! Happy with the shot. 66 degrees, sunny and no wind! Beautiful outside!

f10e25cdf2b8d7e68e1e1f60060f85cc.jpg

Day 5:

Shot was a smidge low and a touch to the left. It was cloudy and drizzling while shooting. Temperature is 62 and little to no wind.

d5300dd1f10691a7c56b5e3e86c2305a.jpg

41cd81dca59822ca40398f8c314c7eea.jpg

Pictured above is the 200 grain iron wills which I was shooting.

Overall thoughts: I hadn’t picked my traditional bow up since late season archery so that was a challenge in itself. I have been shooting my compound preparing for TAC so I figured I’d challenge myself even more and shoot my trad bow! This was a lot of fun! Thanks for the opportunity!

MER - 60yds
Vitals - 10in Circle on the Block Target

Elite Impulse 31 @ 72lbs and 27in DL
Black Gold Pro Hunter 5 pin
8in beestinger
Tightspot 5 arrow
Easton Axis 340 with 50gr brass insert, 4 fletch fusion q2i 2.1in
QAD Exodus Full Blade 125gr
Arrow total weight is 450gr
Stan Xtinction 2

Day 1 - No wind. MISS
I felt the pressure of this fun no pressure challenge. Didn’t go through my regular process and new it was a bad shot the second it released. 8in off center.

1682786922791.jpeg

Day 2 - Light wind. MARGINAL HIT.
Went through my process better but focused too much on my pin and command shot. Shot was on the line, 5in from center.

I did think about the miss from yesterday and spin the arrow hoping to blame equipment. No such luck, arrow and BH spin perfect.

1682878373439.jpeg

Day 3 - Light Wind. HIT
Shot felt better, but not great. 4in from the center. Happy with the vertical placement but want to bring it closer to center on the horizontal.

After these 5 shots I think I will do another set using the 1.5 Sevrs. Interested to see how much more forgiving they are.

1682978644842.jpeg

Day 4 - No wind. HIT

The shot felt good and I watched the arrow head straight down range… then it kept dropping. 4in from center.

1683065016894.jpeg

Day 5 - Light wind and hot. MISS.

Shot felt terrible. Pin was all over and command shot. Should have let down. 6in from center.

1683229769043.jpeg

Final thought - Not happy with my performance. Need to practice more. Also going to test a higher profile vane.

On my third year now. I can honestly say that this is one of the things I have the most fun with every year. My kids shoot with me. Even my wife gets a little excited (even though she won’t admit it). So thank you for doing this!

Last year my MER was 60 yards. That’s coming down this year to 47. A) my target is set from my stand to a trail they all follow. In fact, my son was pulling up for his shot after mine and a doe ran within 3’ of the target! B) my arrows are pulling a little low and left now and I’ll need to re-zero after this challenge is over. C) I tagged my doe at 26 yards last fall.

My setup:
-Mathews Vertix: 28.5” @ 65#
-The Mathews quiver is new this year as well.
-Easton 5mm FMJs @ 28.25” for total weight of 480gr.
-IW s100s are new and replaced last year’s Slick Tricks.
-Using the same arrow I shot my doe with last fall.
-Stock QAD rest
-Not sure which stabilizer that is, but I added a shrewd angled quick release last year.
-Trijicon Accupin sight system. It’s my first adjustable and I love it. I can use it here in Mich, and they’re a hometown company.
-Tuff Guy release. This year I got a boa strap.
-Shooting with my bino pack on to replicate hunting setup.

@JG636: I can still reach out with field points, but you know how little I’ve shot this year.

Primary game is Michigan whitetail, but I’ll practice for elk too. My target:
3680af141828a4c122260f81f5bf293b.jpg

That balloon is about 8” diameter, so splitting deer vitals and elk-heart sized. Gonna try to inflate a little smaller to 6-7” tomorrow.

My range:
d7222b5911c909245b552b59a1548334.jpg

47 yards. 8.4° down angle per my rangefinder. Total elevation change is maybe 8-10’.

Day 1:
Foggy. About 54°F with a bit of a chill from the cool fog. No real wind: a swirling 2-3mph breeze. Felt better than expected when it broke; I’ve been a touch apprehensive since this is literally the first shot I’ve touched off since November. My lovely assistant spotted the shot and is pointing to the arrow.
cd70fda94ea2428be60499fd03bdebb2.jpg

Day 2:
Day 2 was cold, maybe 40°. Steady rain, the kind that gets to your bones, dampens all sound and kills visibility. No real wind. Shot broke great.
58e9fdd4ac41d9c42e6a253cab612648.jpg

Things learned: it buried past the nock. Target is probably getting old and porous? The rain is soaking through that jacket… it’s likely lived its useful life. Could barely see out through its hood, so not likely the best hunting jacket anyway.

I’m also getting better at rapidly progressing through my shot sequence. Less standing, holding, and concentrating on each portion of the draw/acquire/aim/release cycle, and more coordinated shot. Much like my rifle/pistol shooting progressed over the years. This time, I looked, pulled up and as soon as the pin settled, I was ready for the release. And it broke true. That kind of progress is gratifying.

Day 3:
Cold today. 40°. Raining. Stressed myself, consistent with what hunting season will be: I worked last night (I work third shift). The shift ended with a bang. I’m two coffees deep since 0430. Downright twitchy and a little lightheaded right now. Pretty amped up. Frankly, can barely see straight.
3eb2527c5a40b74fecf03355ce65cc95.jpg

The shot broke clean enough. I tagged it. Frankly, I think I got lucky.

Day 4:
Managed to slip one in before I have to took the kid to the orthodontist. It’s spitting rain and snowflakes. About 6-8mph wind from my ten o’clock (right in my eyes). Pulled right.

Still hit the balloon; I really like the binary and immediate feedback to the shot - like shooting steel with firearms. Had to use a pink balloon, per my youngest’s request today.

349260d9732d55b8a878f6319de2f13a.jpg

Day 5:
It’s a beautiful crisp morning here. 39° and a soft drizzle. Gentle breeze out of the south (off the back of my left shoulder). Had to take an extra breath to settle the pin, but broke clean and happy with the results.

Thank you for hosting this challenge! Such a great opportunity to exercise every year. Really, this is just one of those joyful, happy-to-do-it events every year. Thank you again!!!

First time participating for me as well.

Bow Hoyt Spyder 34 67 lbs. 29"draw
MBG 5 pin
Smackdown Pro
Catfish strings

Arrow GT Hunter XT 300 435gr
Tipped with Qad Exodus swept 125
cbc broadhead.jpg

50 yards is my distance
Intended target is the 7" yellow circle of Rinehart 18-1
Conditions mid 40's light rain no wind

Shot 1
cbc shot 1.jpg

Shot 2- 50 degrees heavy rain. Not downpour heavy, but enough that I may not shoot at an animal at this distance, regardless of where this arrow hit the target.
IMG_1968.jpeg

Day 3 - 50 degrees swirling wind but not bad. Feel like I dropped my bow arm to look where arrow was going. Didn’t follow through on target.
IMG_1974.jpeg

Day 4- same temp 50, no wind. Same result. Todays shot almost in yesterday’s hole.

IMG_1976.jpeg

Shot 5 - shot taken Wednesday, posting today. No wind, getting dark. Happy to finish in the vitals. CBC was fun, glad I participated. IMG_1978.jpeg

Completely new set up for this year. Bowtech Solution 71# 29.5”.Spot Hogg triple stack sight, hamskea epsilon rest and a 12” bee stinger stab. Shooting a 29” Goldtip Hunter pro with at 488gr with a ironwill v100 broadhead. Also using a spot Hogg wise guy release I just picked up from the classifieds here. Still getting a feel for this bow coming from the Realm but I think it’s a winner. Set my MER at 70 yards again and first shot today hit. Hope to keep the streak going with the weather we have coming this week. Planning to shoot rain or shine.
Day two hit low left on the plate. Shot broke clean. I added pics of my setup and range.
Day three was gusty winds almost head on with a little sprinkle of rain. Shot broke clean when the wind let up and flew true.
Day four brought the rain. Pretty steady drizzle today and I held off from shooting through a downpour when I got home from work. Rain let up to a drizzle and I went out with my rain coat on. Shot broke clean and hit the plate at the 4 o’clock position. I’ll take it. I never shoot in the rain or practice with my rain gear on. The CBC got me out of my comfort zone.
Day 5….. got home late from my daughters track meet. Rushed out to shoot while the grill was heating up. Starting to drizzle and a light tail wind. Shot broke clean and hit the plate in the 2 o’clock position.

Really happy with how well I shot this bow with only getting it set up in the last month and switching releases to the spot Hogg. I’ve never spent much on releases in the past and I am amazed at the difference. Confidence is pretty high right now. Wish the season was coming sooner….

Tight Spot Quiver

MER: 70 yards,
Target Species: Mule Deer (8 inch diameter vitals)

Day 1: No wind about 50 degrees
day1.PNG

Day 2: A slight straight on breeze. The sun was coming up right behind the target and made aiming difficult, I maybe should have waited a few minutes for better light but if was a big buck I wouldn't have waited so I sent it.
day2.JPG

Day 3: I shot this one at dusk, a slight left to right breeze.
shot3.JPG

Day 4: A pretty stiff breeze from left to right, I held a little wind.
day4.JPG

Day 5: I've done the CBC for several years and had never put that many arrows in the vitals so the pressure was on. It was a bit breezy but not bad. I didn't center punch it, but it's in the vitals, so that's a win!
day5.JPG

Summary: This is such a good activity to shake off the winter cob webs and force me to do archery prep a few months before I probably would. I switched sights this year from a 5 pin slider to a 2 pin, the site picture is much less cluttered, I think that really helped me focus in my shot sequence and put the arrows where they needed to go. Usually I get ~3 arrows in the vitals in this challenge, this is the first time I've put all of them in (if you count on the line on Day 2 as in). Thanks for putting this on! I look forward to doing this every spring.

I picked up a set of wheels to accommodate whitetail season with a new baby in the house. As such, my MER and goals for the season are not long range. Very specifically, I am planning to run and gun during the rut on days I can sneak away. It's all public land Texas deer, and I need to be able to shoot a softball after a long hold at full draw, ideally out to 35 yards.

Buuuut... I just got the bow a few weeks ago, and baby showed up a few days ago. So my MER (i.e. would I attempt a frontal shot on a whitetail buck after rattling him in) is 20 yards at the moment. I'm aiming for the small side dot of a rinehart 18:1. I am shooting this from a knee, with a "30-one thousand" count at full draw, resting a cam on my knee, then bringing it up, and working through the release.

Hoyt RX4 Ultra, 545 grain TAW with 260 Easton Axis, and 125 gr Magnus Black hornet Ser Razor.

Welp... that pretty much tells me it's still my MAX, lol!

Day 2:
Bow jumped out of the valley around 16-one-thousand, and I had to catch it and regain letoff before continuing the count down. Got 'er done, elevated, stayed in my shot, and I'm eating backstrap tonight!
IMG_3213.jpg

Linecutters DEFINITELY count with broadheads...
IMG_3214.jpg

Day 3:
Man... shooting after a long hold at full draw is just flat out difficult. The moral of this story is I need more practice, and I need to make sure it's a broadside shot if I have to hold at full draw for longer than 5-10 seconds.
IMG_3219.jpg

DANG IT! I can't shoot just one arrow! So I decided to scratch the itch by shooting the CBC with my longbow as well, even though I plan to hunt with wheels this fall. Specs: TallTines Stickflinger, 50@32" 66" bow, Easton Carbon Legacy 500's with 135" insert+point weight, and 4 fletch. No broadheads for this half. They aren't tuned atm. Lets call it white tail deer target species, still a 20 yard MER, but broadside shots, and no hold at full draw. Big yellow circle on my rinehart is the kill zone.

Day 1 Trad (5/1/23 5:37PM CST) Backstraps for DINNER! Why do I even need that wheel bow again?
IMG_3220.jpg

Day 2/4 for Trad/Training wheels went well. Although I had to let down at 10 count with the wheel bow when I realized I'd forgotten to rotate my Rinehart. Ran down, reset the target, came back and did it all over again.

Day 2 Trad - well, it worked, but barely...
IMG_3223.jpg

Day 4 with wheels was a good lesson for the field. Reengaging Core/back muscles before finishing the aim made this feel worlds better than the first three days. And it shows!
IMG_3224.jpg

Day 5 with wheels was a win. Learned a ton through this challenge about how to make a good shot after a long hold (timed it out of curiosity and from draw to execution with a 30 Mississippi count, total time was 1 minute) I'm honestly feeling like I've improved enough with this that I'd like to retest the same sequence with wheels ten yards further out after this is done.

IMG_3229.jpg

Day 3 with Trad was... not a win. No lessons to be learned here except that trad is hard, and harder when you don't practice daily.
IMG_3230.jpg

Day 4 Trad:
the grip started slipping in my hand at full draw and it was a mental battle to maintain my hook and keep the shot going. Wound up with a spine shot, which is nice for lack of tracking!
IMG_3241.jpg

Day 5 Trad: One more round of backstraps!

I've been watching for a few years but this is my first time participating. I busted out the stickbow as well. Keeping the MER tight as I'll only be hunting whitetail in the suburbs this year.

Mathews Triax
28" 70lbs
Axis 5mm 300 arrows
CBE single pin slider
QAD rest
Cheap Scott index release -- usually my backup but taking a break from my hinge/thumb normal rotation
MER: 35yds

Stalker Stickbows Coyote SL 58"
28" 53lbs
Easton 76 Freedom 330 arrows
MER: 20 yds

Target: 7" tall by 8" wide diamond on my block target

Day 1:
light rain, 65 degrees, no wind

Triax: definitely jerked the trigger on this one. Didn't feel great.
IMG_0B12EBC88AB6-1.jpeg

Stalker: This one felt pretty good. I kind of figured shooting both bows would make the cold shot on the recurve a bit easier and I definitely think that is the case.

Day 2: light wind but an absolute downpour. Probably heaviest rain I’ve ever shot in.

Stalker: switched to trad vanes for today

Day 3: after two days of rain and bad shots given my short MER, had a beautiful, clear day and two fairly solid arrows.

Day 5: a little windy today but shot ok. In retrospect, I wish I went with a longer MER on both bows.

Just put new strings on the bow last weekend, its fourth set over the years. Spent the eveings this week paper tuning, bareshaft tuning, dialing the sight pins to 60yds w/ broadheads, and getting speed for the 60-100 tape.

I will shoot MER with broadheads at 60yds for this challenge. I will be shooting a different field position each day to replicate different hunting scenarios.

Bow Setup:
LH 2014 Elite Energy 32, 60lb, 26.5 draw
GAS strings, BG Ascent 5 pin slider, QAD HDX rest
Axis 5mm 340 cut to 27", AAE Hybrids, 75g inserts, 100g IW v100 (465g moving 263fps, I believe ~16% FOC)
TruBall Sweetspot Pro hinge release, which I hunt with

bow setup 2023.jpg

Day 1: Flat/level ground, standing. Beautiful day, 80F, no wind. About perfect shot conditions. Made a good shot.

day 1 60yd flat.jpg

day 1 broadhead.jpg

Day 2: Downhill 23 degree slope, standing, uneven ground. Shoot-for distance 60yds, arrow flight 66yds. Sunny, 60F, 5mph wind left to right. Hit a couple inches low but its a lethal hit.

day 2 60yd downhill.jpg

Day 3: Uphill 23 degree slope, shoot-to 60yds. Overcast, 52F, wind right to left ~5-7mph.

day 3 60yd uphill.jpg

Day 4: Flat ground, shooting from knees. Thunderstorm, 42F, raining, swirling wind 10-15mph, lightning/thunder overhead. Pretty elongated pin float kneeling in the wind.

day 4 kneeling 60yd.jpg

day 5: shot kneeling again. Had to prove to myself I'd make this shot when its not a windy thunderstorm. 52F, overcast, calm.
