nice work guys!!!! i have never actually hunted turkey (none close to me) but i'm going on a solo mission in the morning for my first turkey hunt, heading 7hrs NE to go chase some mountain turkey.... feel a bit unprepared, but i'm loading up my pickup and heading out in the AM.... packing a shelter and sleep system in case i need to hike in and camp.... everything is sprayed down with sawyers, and i'm looking forward to trying
My son filled his second tag of the season this morning. Had this tom come running in looking for a fight. Huntley literally shot him off the top of the decoy!
Well, I drove 7.5hrs, nobody was in the area I wanted to hunt, and planned on hiking in tonight and scouting, started in around 5pm, no fresh human tracks, it was looking good... pretty weak on turkey sign, got about 2.5 miles in, no sign, come around a corner and here come some turkey walking out fast... busted! Damn!
went down to see if I could tell where they went, hit snow drifts and turned around, went back up and continued on, and there is a Tom sneaking off at like 80yds... ****!!
went down the edge I had in mind, stop because it looked good and 2 jakes pop out around 40yds and walk down the hill... I think they knew I was there but maybe not.
I went another probably 500yds, and got into the area I had in mind and started taking my time, I was seeing something through the trees about 100yds, little flashes of movement, couldn’t tell if it was just wind or something, I snuck around staying out of sight, got close and snuck over... I peek up, and see the top of a tom’s fan, seriously like 5 yds... I duck down and a hen walked out to my left way too close, she knew something wasn’t right, and started walking back the way she came, I slowly raised up, he poked his head up and I shot him in the face at about 5yds... first turkey down!
gonna try for my second in the morning, just drove down the mountain to call my wife, gonna go back up there and sleep in my pickup bed.
plan is to call one in tomorrow, but I wanted to kill my first one stalking them. It’s plenty safe here, no chance of anyone being around, I’m up in the blue mountains with nobody around
