Opening day public bird here in Colorado. Relatively quiet on the roost up until about 7:30 when this guy decided to hammer off about 100 yards away. Came in on a string after that. Plucked, brined, and deep fried. Gizzard and heart in a cast iron over the campfire that night. First time doing a whole bird that way and I highly highly recommend it.

Really cool. Plucking a bird is a real job. I don't do it often.

well.... i did not kill a second bird, but a few close calls and lots of action. i seriously underestimated these birds.... they are switched on, and very paranoid animals, and just when things look like they are coming together, they throw a curve ball. it would take a long time to talk about all of the encounters and close calls, but it was a great weekend and i learned a ton.... i will be way more prepared the next time.

it is pretty awesome chasing those birds in some of the most unforgiving elk country, for one, it's awesome country to hang out in just because, turkey were the excuse, but it was fun hunting too, and can't wait to go back. the first night i got in the woods at 5pm, when i got back, i had walked 7.8 miles. yesterday was 16.7 miles, and this morning on my hail mary hunt, i walked 9.2 miles.... mostly in circles up and down the same canyon trying to get on birds, then chasing gobbles. big elevation gain and loss usually isn't associated with turkey hunting, but it's a thing chasing Weneha turkey.... i may be ruined for future turkey hunts in different regions, chasing those turkey is hard to beat.

at the minimum, that will be an annual trip, and one i'll look forward to. i wish i had more time for this hunt, i was feeling like i was figuring out the birds and how to hunt them. cool country, and i have a new respect for turkey. this was my first time actually hunting them, but won't be the last.

i'm going to see if i can duck out for another trip late week/weekend.... not sure if i can pull it off, but i'm gonna try.

yeah, caught me off guard! now i'm turkey crazed, feeling like i have unfinished business and i can't just sit on the coast letting those birds win over there in the NE corner of the state! haha.

i can't believe so many people are ho hum about turkey.... it's fun as heck.

just got the text from my buddy at work, and i have the green light from everyone who matters (my wife and work) it's official, i'm going back up to the mountains Thursday night, and the weather should be perfect.... not a good weekend to be a weneha turkey, they will get no chill out time. i have 2 more tags

Just finished guiding yesterday here in Kansas. Our bird numbers are struggling bad so we cut down on the number of hunters we had and was about to get it done!!

Fun ks and ne trip

Called in a young (probably 2 year old) Eastern on the family farm in Missouri. 21#, 10" beard, 3/4" spurs.

Lots of gobbling this morning. Between this bird and two others in the area, I never went more than 5 minutes without hearing a gobble from sunrise til I took the shot. Going back out tomorrow with my dad to hopefully call one in for him.
