2021 Montana Elk Draw

I went through it last year when I hunted Montana as a NR. I bought a pref point in 2018, 2019, and then one with the application in 2020, and I still only had 2. I called and talked to FWP and they said I could only have 2. Maybe I wasn't grandfathered in...must have started with the 2019 pts.

That sure is strange that they took your point and told you can only have 2. I know for a fact you can have 3 points preference. The guy I applied with this year has 3, I saw his FWP info with my own eyes. Also, I’m pretty sure I saw a few years ago that people had drawn with 3 points when the info was published on go hunt.

Yeah I'm not going to argue about it. I shared the facts that I experienced last year and what the FWP explained to me when I called in about it. I was pissed, but they explained it as clear as mud. I drew my tag and killed a nice 6 pt bull. I hope you and your buddy do the same

So I'm sure that FWP will take your money for a 3rd preference point, but check out the draw results on the FWP website...they only show applicants with 0, 1, or 2 preference points.

You can spend your money however you want, but if you have 2 points buying a 3rd point doesn't matter at all to FWP, they only count the first 2, anything after that is just gravy. With 2 points you are going to draw.

Straight from the FWP website. There were folks drawing the big game combo with 3 points in 2018 and 2019. In 2020, they don’t show anyone with 3 points drawing, so I guess we’re both right?

- 3 points holders were not shown in the 2020 results breakdown. They were combined with the 2 point holders into a 2+ category that was %100. Screwy.

I read somewhere that they will charge your credit card a day or so before if you draw the tag. Is that true?

MT charges your card when you apply and then refunds you in the future if you are unsuccessful. Draw results being posted is the way you’ll find out.

Huh I’ll have to reach out to FWP. Mine was not charged when I applied. I did get the receipt from them though.

For Elk/Deer individual or combo and antelope, you front the license fee. For Bison, Sheep, Goat, and Moose, you pay an application fee and are charged if successful. If you did not get charged the full license cost on Deer/Elk, something is way wrong and might be too late to fix.
