My crew has been building elk/deer points for a few years with no clear idea on what to use them on. After last season we decided to give our ML's a try. After looking into things, we decided to hold off until 2019 to (hopefully) draw our ML tags. Likely would have drawn this year but decided to wait based off the season dates next year. 2019 ML season runs from 9/14-9/22 which is basically a week later than recent years and the thought was that bulls would be in full rut.

We've always focused on archery seasons during weeks 2 and 3. So the later date sounds pretty exciting from what I hear from the 4th week archery guys.

Anyone have thoughts on this strategy? Am I the only person :)D) who decided to go this route, or do you think others may have done the same, saved their points and the ML draw will be tough in 2019??

Thanks!

I burned my points this year as I missed the rut last year for the first time in as long as I can remember (first child born on 9/8/17). I did notice that the dates this year, 9/8 - 9/16, are earlier than in 2019, but I couldn't resist. Good luck next year!

This is the last year the seasons start early. Next year it will reset to a week later and ratchet up a day earlier each year.
Its been this way for years and its definitely not a secret about next year's dates.

Good luck

I don’t think most guys care that much on the lower tier units as far as season dates. A few might but I don’t think it affects draw odds that much.

I certainly understand that season dates are public knowledge. I was more or less asking if anyone thought that next year will see more hunters throw in for ML season based off the later season structure. So a unit that may typically be 100% w/ 2 or 3 points now is only 75%?

Appreciate the feedback. Good luck to all

If it were me, I'd still go archery and hunt it that ML week AND the last week. That gives you twice as long to hunt.

Not sure I'd be able to swing both an OTC tag and ML tag in same season as a NR. I've not looked into the cost but I'm guessing I'd have to pay full price for both? I like your thinking, though! I'll also be taking my 12 yo son on his first elk hunt next year so one week is about all I'll be able to get him out of school.

I would say in the better units it could affect point creep but lower tier id say no it wouldn’t affect.

How often does the season reset? I burned my points this year and hunt in a unit that typically takes 5 points to draw (although it took me 6) does this happen every 5 yrs?

I’m not a smart man but I think it is every 5 years. Like any other date, the day moves up one day of the week every year and two days on a leap year so the 2nd Saturday in September will move back a full week every 5 years. Unless there happens to be two leap years since the last reset......crap never mind. I’m not sure. I just check the calendar on my phone.....

Season in Colorado always starts on the last Saturday in August, so it’s roughly every 5 years.

Who knows. Application rates have been rising, never know when people want to burn their PPs.
Im sure if you looked back thru the draw stats you could maybe see a trend?

I know that Wyoming stats got blow out of the water this year. 2 Elk PPs was a guarantee General tag, but not anymore.

There are rumblings that the CPW may consider a Sept 1 -30 archery season in the next BGSS
If they do that, the ML season dates will be affected also

This ain’t no joke! Point creep in WY has become a big problem. It’s across the board even w limited draw units. I think the issue w WY is a lot of ppl were obviously sitting on the sidelines w pts and Now applying and also just way more new applicants.
