2016 F150 with 2.7l ecoboost - have questions

Anybody in here have experience with the truck/engine listed above? Have heard of some possible transmission issues but not as much of an issue with the 6 speed in the 2.7? I’m not much of a gear head so hoping to get some input. Have found a couple that seem reasonably priced and am looking to upgrade from a 2010 Tacoma (more room for kids in the back). Thanks all

I had that engine in a 4door and hated, poor mileage and not much pep. Stock tires also. Didn’t have it long enough to have tranny issues.

I got a 2021 2.7l with the 10 speed tranny. I really like it and avg 20 mpg.

If you don't need the power (more than 300 or so) the base v6 in the ram and ford are very reliable and lower cost to buy/operate.

I have a 2021 F150 super crew 5.5’ bed with 2.7l and 10 speed. I upgraded from a 2010 Tacoma. I love it. I average 21mpg, tow a 21’ boat, back seat is great for kids, quieter smoother. The 10 speed took some getting used to but I would not go back to a Tacoma and I liked that truck too. Currently have 52k on the F150.

76,000 on a 2019 crew cab 5.5ft bed. Super happy with the drive train and truck. 23mpg average over my last 737mi and plenty of power should I need it. Tows the boat or airstream just fine. Only thing I'd change is a longer bed.

If it was wrecked today I'd buy another.

FYI they changed the block in 2018 or 2019.

Some of the 2016 2.7s had valve seat/cylinder head issues that caused smoke at startup. My cylinder heads were replaced at about 60k, it still smoked at start up until it got traded at 230k.

The oil pans had an issue with cracking. I had mine replaced by Ford twice. The last pan cracked and weeped oil, it wasn’t a lot of oil loss between changes so it never got fixed again. I personally think the mating surface on the engine block wasn’t flat.

They also had an issue with the electric fans turning on and running on high under certain driving conditions. The fans would turn on and run until the truck was restarted. Local Ford dealership couldn’t determine the cause of the issue, I always assumed it was related to the transmission. 2016 wasn’t a good year for F150’s.

Get on the forums. 2016 2.7 F150 is one of the most reliable half tons ford has ever made. Very little trouble with the 2015-2017 trucks.
In 2018 they went to the 10 speed and had some issues, the 6 spd is bulletproof. the 2.7 got updated later, 2020 I think, and became less reliable.
Not sure what was wrong with Lyles truck but the 2.7 gives excellent mpg (mine got 24 mpg highway with 33" all terrians) and is one of the quickest pickups out there giving 5 second 0-60 times.
I loved mine, only sold it to go to a gas super duty.

My dad has one he bought used, has about 168k now on it and he loves it. Plenty of power and gets 20mph, I just drove it the other day. I have an 18' with same motor and the 10spd and I like it better, but my dad truck is fine.

You will love it.
Massive upgrade over Toyota in every way.
I have a 2015 F150 with the 3.5 Eco 6sp and just turned 170k.
Excellent platform and the only engine-related issue was exhaust manifold bolts failing.
I paid under $2k to have the replaced with upgraded units and gtg.
To echo another comment, I love having the 6.5' bed with a canopy.

I just sold my 2015 f150 2.7 because it had 255,000 miles on it. It was time for a new one. Motor still ran amazing. Same with the 6 speed transmission. I towed all sorts of toys with it (RZR, 18' boat, atvs, dirtbikes and snowmobiles) in the mountains. Never had a real motor issue. The water pump went out at 230,000. Had that replaced for $1,000.

I bought a 2020 f150 XLT with the 5.0 engine. I miss the pep of the turbos. My 2015 hauled a** up the steep mountain roads.

Given the oil consumption and 10 speed CDF drum issues that ford won't issua recall on in my 2019 F150 5.0 10 speed, I'm seriously considering selling it and finding a 15-17 2.7 with similar miles. All I tow is an 18' fishing boat.
