2.5-15x: The ideal hunting scope?

I just wish 2.5-10 NXS was 3-12 instead. I'd buy two and stop thinking about scopes for the rest of my life.

something with a 3-4 low range and 14-16 upper range would be perfect for me. 3.5-14 or 4-16 gives me everything I could want. I used a straight 6 deer/elk hunting and didn't have any problems with a 15-20 yard shot on a deer.
I would think that a lot of people might have a different rifle for dangerous game vs their deer/elk rifle and so they might not need/want a 2.5 low end. I have not done any dangerous game hunting so I could be totally wrong with my statement.

For a non-dangerous game rifle, 2.5-15 is a nice range. But it really depends on need, IMO.

For a dangerous game rifle, hard NO. Too heavy and large on a big bore rifle. It'll shake apart, and/or break rings/mounts. It may survive on a braked rifle, but isn't the right setup. A DG rifle is a very purpose built machine and it requires no compromise in construction. A scope is fine on one, but 1X on the low end is appropriate in that case. It should have QD mounts with iron sights as well. It's a specific application with no margin for error. The Trijicon 1-4X Accupoint with red or green triangle post is the best out there IMO for this application.

I'd guess it's expensive to design a new scope body for a very limited share of the market also I could never tell the difference between a 10x and 12 power scope so again a marginal market share for a scope line

In a LR/general purpose hunting scope, a well designed reticle is more important than mag range or big Xs. IMO. Gimme a 3-12 with a bold, usable reticle.

Isn't this your second market research thread this year? And the first one you ghosted after @Formidilosus gave you the answers on what a perfect scope is? And is it true you're telling wkrs that drop testing scopes is abuse and invalidates the warranty?

Why do you need to start a new thread instead of reading and learning from the scope performance info that we have already compiled in the long range sub forum?

Hondo64 got the okay from Tract to drop the scope they gave him for testing.

Tract must be talking about their SFP version of their scope that has the T-Plex in it. I don’t see someone walking through the bush with a FFP set on 2.5 with the reticle choices they have for them looking for a Cape Buffalo or Elephant. Those reticles are skinny and have 100mph wind holds. I’ve blasted them about it when it was announced. I’ll leave it at that.

I’d rather have a scope with a big eye box than a scope with lots of magnification. It seems the more x, the more critical eye relief can be. I also don’t like a top-heavy rifle, so I keep my scopes light.

I use a lot of fixed 4x and 6x scopes. The highest magnification I have on a big game rifle is 10x in a variable scope. My coyote calling rifle has a 4-12x variable. I would use less if I didn’t take it out looking for chucks every now and again.

I just wish the market research team for any scope manufacturer would look at and learn from the drop and dial testing info that this site has collected. The answers are all their, it shouldn't cost $3,000 to get a useful long range hunting optic.

I thought tract told a wkr to pound sand on drop testing earlier this year but I'm happy to hear they're letting Hondo64 evaluate it. I've tested one swfa, have another and a trijicon to do next time I'm at the range.

What if a BOAL steps out at last light on the last day in a tornado at 425yds? Obviously you haven’t considered that!

I inadvertently tested a Zeiss V4 1-4. It fell out of one of my NSWC gun lockers (Real deal lockers with the tags in them still, I didn’t care about that though because they work and were a steal price wise) from bellybutton height. My 10.5” AR played Plinko on the way down and hit my basement floor. I didn’t check zero, I just dialed up 8MOA and sent the bullets. They impacted in the same group as my other ARs. Next time I’m somewhere with 100 yard target I’ll mess with tracking but until then I’ll leave it for messing around at the farm.

They are good at ghosting whenever durability comes up.

yeah, they just completely vanish. Its like when I ask my kids to help pull weeds in the garden. I really don't understand why though. There's really like three options:

1. their scopes work, are tested, and they can prove it.
2. it's not a valid design criteria, for whatever reasons they consider valid
3. they've realized they need to make improvements and have something in development that they think will work based on the design tweaks and new testing protocol.

it's not that hard.

Hey crew,
I'll be entirely honest I dropped the ball on this thread. Through some combination of not seeing alerts and time away this month, a bunch of responses went unanswered. Ghosting was not intentional. Though @ResearchinStuff is spot on about kids and weeding, or folding laundry, walking the dog, or anything outside of snacks and gifts.

Some of our posts are market research. We also want to see other folks' opinions about everything from throw levers to illuminated reticles. We don't just want to mine opinions; we want to encourage conversation in the forum.
