Trying to decide on a scope. Will be going on a lightweight AR10 18” hunting rifle in 308 (about 7lbs without a scope or ammo). Max range probably 350 yards, for deer, elk, pronghorn in the west. Currently live in NorCal, but hunting Colorado, WY, SD, and Nevada are all on the table. Probably will hunt Colorado the most, moving back there soon.
Stuck between the Leupold VX5HD 2-10x42mm Firedot and the VX5HD 3-15x44mm Side Focus Firedot. 2-10x seems like all I’ll really need, and the lower end is nicer for up close shots. However, for only an ounce more, I get a lot more on the top end, plus side focus, with the 3-15x, and 3x is still plenty wide FOV on the low end. Seems like the 15x could be nice for taking a closer look once I’m sighted in on some animals at long ranges. I have a weird astigmatism so being able to adjust and focus as much as I can is nice.
I also have a Delta Stryker HD 1-6X scope coming, that will be shared with my AR-15 (also have a red dot for the AR-15) - so I’m wondering if the 3-15x might be a better compliment, as I could always throw on the 1-6x for hunts that are more in timber and wooded areas and closer ranges. Even though I am not planning on shooting out that far with the AR10, I’d hope to keep this scope 10+ years so it may go on a longer range rifle one day too.
Anyone have any experience with both? Is the eye box on one noticeably better than the other (let’s say at 10x magnification)? I’ve also been looking through a VX3-HD 3.5-10x40mm, which is pretty nice, but at 10x the eye box seems a little tight to me, and the variable eye relief (4.4-3.6” from low to high mag) seems like it’d be annoying when setting a good cheek weld. At 3.5x the FOV is decent and eye box seems fine. Can anyone compare the eyebox between the VX3HD and the VX5HD?
Also still open to any other good optics that are 20 Oz or under and in the $1k price range. I like the simple duplex Firedot reticle, but wind holdovers would be nice.
