Hey everyone, just curious as to y’all’s thoughts on which is the better optic. Most of my hunting would be under 250 yards but wouldn’t be too crazy to have a 450-550 yard shot.

That’s a personal decision and since you put Leupold in the title be prepared for all kinds of extra opinions…

On a hunting rifle I really like a 2-10, 3-12 but I hunt quite a bit of thick stuff and a long shot for me would be 300

A 2-10 would be plenty out to 500 yards. Buy the scope to work for what you do the majority of the time with it.

I'd opt for the 2-10. But what is more important to me is glass clarity, FOV, and light gathering. I was shooting my fixed 10X out to 1356 yards this weekend. I spotted some coyotes out at 1430 yards and had to use my spotting scope to confirm what they were.

It’s somewhat dependent on how you like to shoot. Would you ever use the 2x? Would you ever use the 15x?

A coyote or big fat rock chuck out there at 550 yards looks really really small at 10x.

Rock chuck at 533 yards with my fixed 10X SWFA. Badger at 659 yards with the same rifle and scope. SWFA 10X doesn't have the best clarity imo. About that of a VariX II at best. But good enough for hunting. IMO clarity and brightness trumps magnification. You could go with higher magnification, it's all personal preference. I spotted two coyotes this past weekend at 1420-1480 yards. I could see them with 10X but needed to bring out the spotting scope to make sure they weren't dogs or wolves.

I've shot 600+ with an old Redfield 3-9, but these days I prefer more power with decent glass. I have a couple 4.5-14's, a 3.5-15, and a 3-18.

I would go with the 2-10. The problem with higher magnification is people are tempted to use it, even though it is not needed, and it is harder to spot shots. Well, that is my uneducated opinion.

Man for some reason that just clicked for me in a way that other reasons have not. Great way to put it.

I have the vx5 HD in 3-15x44 with fire dot duplex on my 270wsm and I like it. The other scope is look at would be the zeiss v4 conquest 3-12.

The 2-10 vx5HD Has a huge advantage in field of view. This can be very helpful. to me it's the best of both worlds. I can shoot deer at 20 yards but still can reach out there if need to. you simply can put something in the scope much quicker with more FOV. Now if you said most your shots were going to be over 250 I might go with the 3.5-15
