We are gonna need some more pictures, friend. You can't just tease us like that.

Mine is a 2001. Best vehicle I have ever owned.
The 3.0 had a bit of a bad rap but if you look at the number of them still on the road with a ton of miles, they wouldn’t scare me. Only motor I’ve actually blown up (so far ) was a 22re in a 4Runner… though at the time I was really bad with normal service, but I think the 22re is just way overworked in a 4Runner unless you live in a flat state… there are long grades everywhere on the coast, and it would be 3rd gear wound up a lot, I just don’t think it was a good motor for the 4runner… next level gutless too, almost as bad as a stock samurai on 31’sI’ll crawl under it this afternoon. Supposedly it’s had lots of rehab lately, including a clutch kit and replacement of u-joints. The only thing I’m concerned with is the power steering system, so I’ll be asking about it and checking for fluid leaks. Had my eyes out for an old 4Runner for a while, checked out a few and passed on them but they had the 22RE 4cylinder. Fingers crossed here.
I had read a lot about the engine overheating when running the AC and going up grades. Previous owner of this one actually installed an aux fan to help this, guess I’ll find out how well it works this summer.I had a '94 PU with the 22RE and it was a slug for sure.
Great truck but in the mtns. at hwy speeds I'd have to turn
off the AC, and still found myself trying to help it along.
Great info man, thanks for sharing. You don’t happen to have any pics of the jump wire in the diagnostic box do you? I’ll take a look under the hood when I home to find the box and make a note of the sequence.Yeah that is a nice looking rig! Makes me miss my old one a lot! A few things I'm remembering that might be helpful to you owning one of these..
Make or buy a little jump wire to keep in the glove box. That's how you will check for engine codes. There's a small diagnostics box under the hood and you have to use a jump wire to connect E1 to TE1 before doing the key sequence. It also saved my ass on a fishing trip when my fuel pump relay crapped out and I used the jump wire to bypass it in that diagnostic box or I would have been stranded in the middle of nowhere.
I also cut a hole under the carpet in the backseat to replace the fuel pump easily without having to drop the fuel tank - recommended. If/when your rear springs get saggy replace with Moog springs. Ok rambling now, happy for you though.
So far my only gripe is no factory cup holder. Shifting and drinkingThe 3.0 had a bit of a bad rap but if you look at the number of them still on the road with a ton of miles, they wouldn’t scare me. A friend of mine got 370k out of a 3.0 4Runner and didn’t have to do anything major on it (never had a head gasket go out) and sold it running well.
I loved my 91 4Runner despite having to put an engine in it, and I was able to drive it to the mechanic about 15 miles away with big chunks of piston in my oil pan… it wasn’t running well, but it did make it
Still one of my favorite woods rigs, those things are pretty hard to stop off-road, and they are good on slippery roads. I have considered getting one just for that. It had to get pretty ugly to have to put it in 4wheel drive, the 3 friends I grew up with all had Toyota pickups, 2 extended cab 3.0, one standard cab 22re, and the 4Runner was a lot easier in snow, deep mud or icy roads… I have always missed that rig, even though it was brutally gutless with the 22re
Only got it stuck twice, and both times the rig had no blame, it was an excellent rig. It was really easy to drive in the snow
Definitely go on this site. Anything you want to do, someone has done it and can help you. Great group of 4R owners.
I just pulled this off the interweb but it looks like this. You see the blue jump wire going into the contacts which are labeled under the cap. E1 to TE1 is for check engine code diagnostics. FP to +B was to bypass fuel pump relay, I remember that one well and hopefully you never need it.Great info man, thanks for sharing. The mess was behind me.Yeah we need more pics. Including the interior.
Also, fess up. Did you clean your garage special just to take these pics?
Maybe try something more delicate like bud lightSo far my only gripe is no factory cup holder. Shifting and drinkingbeercoffee is hard.
Haha one of the first things I did to my '96 was buy this after market cup holder (except 3rd gen in my case obviously). Guy 3D prints them and has been doing it for a while. I really dig the quality and the convenience. So far my only gripe is no factory cup holder. Shifting and drinkingbeercoffee is hard.
It’s fitting that @Dos XX liked that post.Maybe try something more delicate like bud light
