What’s the damage report on the 243? I can’t wrap my head around that not blowing a softball out the back side
I killed hundreds with my 243 and they can definitely zipper a pelt just like any of the smaller calibers you speak of if shot at the wrong angle but with a good bullet and decent shot angle they are just fine. For my thermal setup i purchased a .224 Valkyrie blemished upper from PSA for 299, bought a lower for like 150 and then dropped in an Elftmann trigger $200 and that set up has filled many truck boxes of fur over the last 6-7 years.

I only ever tried the 55NBT at a crono'd 3980 and it nearly cut dogs in half out to 200 yds.
if hide is valued, I'd stay away from 6mm all together.
I've had mixed results with 22-250 and pass throughs/holes. it kills like lightning but inside 200 can be excessive.

I'm also interested in a 17/20 cal plinker again. I see Shaw chambers 17/20-223 semi-prefits for Howa/Tikka for $300-$350

I have a friend who puts up more coyote fur with a rifle than anyone I have heard of. He also comes from a family of bachelor uncles that tinker with small bore rifles more than anyone I know. He has messed with lots of wildcat cartridges and plenty of well knowns. In the end, his main 2 varmint rifles are a 204 ruger AR and a 17 fireball ultralight built on a Solo 300. He does a lot of night hunting nowadays. Favors a gen 3 trigger stick with a bogpod saddle on top. Sets the rifle up, then runs a handheld thermal to scan while the call is going.

I pack a gen 2 ruger american in 204 ruger. I upgraded it to a timney trigger and found it to shoot best with light bullets and the suppressor on! It shot a .3 MOA group at 250 yards 3 weeks ago. 32gr V-max drop the yotes like a piano fell on them and fur damage is minimal! Another friend that does alot of night hunting recently went from a 204 AR to the same rifle I am running.
Whatever you go with, remember you will pack it plenty along with your gear so no reason to go with anything heavy! Have Fun!

Anyone shot the ruger predator in the 204?
I picked up a gen 2 and have put lots of rounds through it. I upgraded to a timney trigger.
I tried 32-40 grain bullets including Blitzkings, V-Max, TNT, and Ballistic tips. Benchmark, CFE223, and Varget. All with CCI match primers in Nosler Brass.
Worst groups were the 39/40gr bullets, best was the 32gr V-max over CFE223, with Benchmark doing well also. "Best" being 5 shot groups into 3/4" consistently at 100. I generally get rifles to do better but settled there for "Minute of coyote".
Cool thing is when I later put a suppressor on it the groups shrunk! As mentioned above it did 3 shots into 3/4" at 250 yards :)

Shoot hpbt and the fur damage goes down. Also, Berger hunting bullets do pretty well with smallish exits. If shooting close you can get by better with a small bullet moving fast. Past 300 yards is where something 50 grains plus with a plastic tip and moving really fast shines. Past 400 or 500 I like something 6mm with a high bc plastic tipped bullet. With a 243, I have always had issues with exits. It was just a metter of how often and how big a hole it made. Had way less exits with a 22/250 and 55 bt. Even less with a 204 and 40 vmax. Pelts are worth nothing around here so I've been using a 243AI with 105s for a long time now.
