Admittedly, I’m intrigued by oddballs and new stuff… 17-223, 17 Fireball, 20 Practical, 20GT, 22GT and ARC… I’d love to find a cartridge/load that doesn’t exit, just kills like lightning.

I’m a coyote guy. Huge majority of my shots are 50-125 yards and never over 250. It’ll be a dedicated night gun off of a tripod and I will be handloading whatever I end up with.

I get lost in twist rate, velocity, barrel length and bullet weight when it comes to a combo that minimizes fur damage

What would you guys be buying/assembling if you were in my shoes? Would it be a $500 Ruger American or a $1600 semi custom build…

(I already have a 223, I just want a new setup)

I'm 100% in the boat of my gun is a tool, I don't throw it on the ground and abuse it, but I don't want to cry if it gets a scratch either. I go with the most accurate, weather resistant, cheap gun I can find.
My varmit gun is a used, synthetic stock, with a matte stainless barrel, think it cost me $300, don't care if it gets beat up.

For a Night gun - 243 slow twist and shoot the 58 grain vmax, 22-250 shooting 50s, or the 22 creed - in that order.

The cheap and easy option if you like oddballs and since .17-223 was on your list (especially if you already have an AR or parts around):

I would choose the 17-223, built on a Howa mini action. I shoot a CZ 527 chambered in .17 Remington, loaded with the 25 grain Vmax at 4000 fps. I have shot coyotes and foxes with it and rarely had an exit . Its hard to be more fur friendly than a single .17 caliber hole.

MV x 720 / twist rate = rpm

Max velocity = 24-26” barrel and slower twist (4000-4300fps)

Pros -of 12 or 14 twist is light bullets going fast with less damage (~200,000 to 250,000 rpm) but enough penetration.

Cons - wind dominates your light low bc bullet way more than you would think!

Personally I think the 20 cal in a suppressed AR is fun, just has its limits.

Personally I love the 20's, used to have a 20 practical, then a 20-223ai and now a 204 ruger. 0-500 yds it is my absolute favorite gun to shoot. I probably wouldn't use it on yoter dogs much past 350-400, those little missiles run out of juice quick.
