Thanks for all the responses. I ended up chopping the 308 to 18" to start. Can always take more off, but much harder to put more on...

All my suppressors are rated to 16" .308 so we are good to go on that front.

I may end up chopping the 6.5 as well.

Seems like there is some discussion and unresolved disagreement regarding whether the 308 "does better" than the 6.5 when reducing barrel length, ie loses less velocity per inch of barrel reduction.

Does anybody have sources to show?

It’s a theoretical difference and if there is a good experimental source, it sure hasn’t been publicized well. It would be very difficult to eliminate other variables and require a lot of barrels, and many different powder recipes. Regardless, it shouldn’t be a significant difference and lead the decision between choosing a 6.5 or 308. I am of the opinion that the bullet we want to use, then how fast we want to start it from, are much more important considerations.

Besides, if we don’t mind losing 50-200 fps with a 16-18” barrel, what’s maybe 10-20 fps more?

I would chop the 308 to 18". I am pushing a 150gr AB a little above 2800fps with 18" barrel and can, not even close to max load. IMO 6.5 surpressed is a little louder than supressed .308 Good Luck!
This is my experience too. The CM is 20” the 30818”. I’m getting 2950 with 155s.

If you have a 308 you're chopping and a 6.5 that you might chop, come up with a chronograph and the best source on this subject can be you.

An 18” .308 will work well.

A .308 will be more efficient in a shorter barrel simply because in the same length barrel there will be more bore area for the powder to burn due to the larger bore.

That’s why a .308win can push a 150gr bullet 300fps faster than a 6.5 creedmoor and a 6.5 creedmoor can push a 85gr bullet 300fps faster than a 22creedmoor.

If you want published data compare with hodgons load data base that have testing pressures provided.

I run a 18” 6.5 creedmoor with 140s at 2590fps and a 16” 30-06 with a mild load and 215 bergers at 2415fps. I shoot them both together out at 750 yards. The 30-06 has much less wind drift and has 1500lbs of energy at 600 yards. It beats the creed in every category except felt recoil. That said a 6.5 creed would be fine out to 400 yards

9.5lbs with scope and TB ultra 5, recoil to me is not bad at all. It recoiled more when I used to run 2530fps with rl17 but the h4350 load at 2415 softened things up a bit.

Can't argue with that.

I went 16" .308 and get 2700+ with a 150 mono. This rifle was meant for my kids, but I have really enjoyed shooting it myself.

Here’s an 18” 30-06 and my 18” 308. Both had collars installed so I can direct thread 5/8x24. Silencers are at back ultra 7 and a banish 30.

Here’s my bushpig: kimber MA in 308 cut to 16” with an ultra 7 and 6x42 leupold wide duplex. Will shoot this afternoon. Have a bunch of velocity data with factory and handloaded 130ttsx, 175gr terminal ascent and SMKs, 150 and 180gr Game kings from the 22” barrel pre cut and will share what I find!

Results:
Factory barnes ttsx 130gr 3170fps pre 2989 post
Factory federal terminal ascent 175gr 2640fps pre 2508fps post
48gr W760 w/ sierra gameking 180gr 2578 pre 2425 post

Are the new velocities WITH the can attached? Similarly, were the previous data for the 22" barrel W or W/O the suppressor?

I have a feeling you're not actually interested in an answer, but there are plenty of examples in these threads.

I asked a specific question, there’s a lot of dead deer, cows, couple moose, and antelope on there, all of which die a lot easier than a mature bull elk.

Maybe you can answer, how many elk have you killed with a 22 center fire or 6mm?

I’ve killed several deer, antelope, and caribou with a 243 so I’ll plenty aware of how well they work. I’ve also killed 25 elk and watched at least 5 times that amount get killed personally.

So your an authority because you read information you read on the internet’s with no real life personal experience to back it up?
Please show me where I said I was an authority. You asked a question, and I provided threads with the answers. If you aren't able to process that, there isn't anything more I can do for you.
