looking for feedback from those that run shorty 6 creeds, and what barrel length is short but optimal for pushing 108’s. I am mostly between 16.5-18” but would entertain up to 20”

Thank you for your input!

Define optimal for yourself:

Ie.

Density Altitude of your primary hunt locations.

Define a max effective range that is realistic for your capabilities.

Work backwards from there to determine what velocity you need to get to that point. That will inform how long of a barrel you will need.

Man for a 6 creed I’d want to take as much advantage as possible, otherwise I’m just shooting my .243.

For 6 creed and high BC heavies, 18” with factory ammo at mid DA gives you an 800ish yard gun.

I personally like to stay closer to 2,000 FPS impact velocity if I can with the bullets I shoot.

Run some calcs with your planned bullet and see what you come up with. DO NOT overestimate your velocities like everyone does.

I have a 20" 6cm currently. 40gr of h4350 behind a 108 eldm puts me at 2920 mv, no can, 2090 @ 600.

Next barrel I'm looking at 16.5. Target mv would be 2800 with a can, have a bit of room to add powder charge if need be. That would put me just under 2000 @ 600. 5kDA.

I only have 18" but I really like that length. Enough velocity, not too unwieldly with a 6-7" can. It's already on the verge of being ass heavy so no desire to go shorter for open country hunting. Wouldn't hate a little less length for treestand/blind hunting.

For an 18” with a 5-6” can to be ass heavy, are you using a heavier chassis and titanium can?

Most of mine that are suppressed, even with shorter barrels, with wood and carbon Sporter stocks, still lean a bit nose heavy. I don’t have the lightest suppressors in the world tho.

My 16” 6 creed pushed 109s at 2900 and 115 DTACS at 2860. If I recall correctly, I was shooting the factory 108s around 2760.

Probably a bit biased by recollections of shooting in a krg bravo. But IIRC even in a rokstok with a Scythe, flat cap, no cover, putting it on a bag in front of the mag it wanted to teeter towards the back end. I mount my scopes further back than most as well which likely plays a part. Not an issue by any means with rokstok and probably not a factor worth considering much if a suppressor will be used.

I’m debating this same thing with myself, how far to cut my 23 inch barrel to accommodate 6 inch suppressor.
I’m planning to actually take a day and chronograph my load that day, cut it to 20 inches, chronograph again, depending on that keep cutting and checking fps until it’s within 1/4 inch of what will work for me.
Then take it to have that last bit cut properly and threaded.
I really hope I can end up with 16-17 inches so the total length the same or slightly shorter than my current 23 inch barrel.

I went 18”. Like most others the heavies around 2800. Lighter coyote loads at 3000+ depending on bullet. Don’t regret it one bit and it’s a pretty versatile little rifle.

Similar to others, my 18” is shooting factory 108’s at 2780 with 150 rounds through it so far. Just grabbed another case of 200 so we’ll see if it climbs anymore, but overall I’m happy with the length/balance/weight.

20” here, factory 108’s are going 2850. Pretty happy with it. Might consider 18” next time but it balances really well the way it is.

Could always +P the thing if you plan to hand load. Then you could go 16 and still keep the 18-20 speeds.
My .243 +P pushes 108s at 2850, 15inch with pinned MB.

Sorry... late to the thread.

18 inch 6mmCreed (ultra7 suppressor)
108 eldm, 2865fps at 40deg F.
N555/lapua brass
1/8 twist

My son took 3 critters with it in 2024
Black Bear 400 yards
White Tail Buck 325 yards
Cow Elk 550 yards

*** this is a very lightweight setup compared to most. Barrel was done by LRI, heavy fluting brought it down to about 24oz. Whole rifle weighs just 4lbs 2oz (bare). But it still shoots .75moa, and my kids can hit my 720 yard gong first shot.

18” 6mm CM Rainier Arms Ultramatch barrel on a Defiance action. I looked at having a 16” made and am glad I didn’t. Velocities are slow enough with the 18”.

My observed velocities (all factory ammo:
Berger 108gr Elite Hunter: 2750fps
Berger 109gr LRHT: 2650fps
Norma 107gr Golden Target: 2890fps
Hornady Match 108ELDM: 2740fps

Someday I’ll get around to loading the spent Lapua brass from the Berger ammo with some of the 109 ELDMs I picked up and hope to hit 2900.
