I have a good friend that was lucky enough to draw a 14c sheep tag, Peters Creek, for this season. I am going to accompany him on the trip, so was just wondering if anywhere had any knowledge or pointers about hunting this area. Looking for best points of access, etc....and any info around the Mitre or Bellicose.

Also, any good gear recommendations would be helpful as well.

O'Rielly:

Just to be clear, The Mitre is located between the East Fork of Eklutna and the main branch of Eklutna.

But anyway, I started hunting all that country back in the mid 1960's. I know it well; almost too well, but that's another story.

Last time I was in the headwaters of Peters Creek I found rams up both forks of Peters Creek. But the largest ram that I found in there while on that trip was just over the top from Icicle, beneath Killiak. Definitely over 40 inches and heavy.

Beware of brown bears while hunting in there. I've almost always seen brown bears while in the headwaters and I've had some confrontations with them a little lower down, in the timber.

If you'd like, your hunting partner can contact me through this site and give me his phone number and I'll call him, so we can look over some maps.

Ah, good point on the Mitre. My friend is not on this site, do you any website or contact info for yourself that I could pass along to him, that would be helpful.

Send a PM to me with his number or email address and I'll contact him, if he'd like.

The sheep season is about to begin and I'm fairly busy with that obligation, but I could meet-up with him or both of you guys at The Valley Hotel in Palmer for a cup of coffee and look over some topographical maps.

He's got a good tag. That's a fun valley to hunt. There's always been rams in there and that hasn't ever changed. Very picturesque, too.

Very lucky to have someone generous enough to share their information and wisdom in the mountains.

I'd love to hear the story. Must have been a pretty young lad at the time, no?

Some websites he says 70's, now the 60's. He's basically been hunting sheep in Alaska since the gold rush.

Do I doubt his wisdom or knowledge? No. Do I believe all the stories of hinterland expeditions? No.

I love a good chuckle every now and then.

O Reilly, If you're heading back to Bellicose then you're already in the right spot. Which time-frame did your buddy draw; early, middle,or late tag? The middle and late time-frame tags offer a bit more challenge. There will already have been a number of hunters through this small area by the time you arrive and the sheep will have felt the pressure. The rams will move up to the tip top of the mountains or the nasty stuff and won't like to wonder down. If you find a nice ram you may have to be patient and sit on him for a couple days and hope no other hunters come through to keep him pushed up into the rocks.
