I have decided to hang a 10mm Glock 40 MOS of my new EXO pack in an Ivory holster as a bear/large game deterrent as well as sasquatch and human d-bag deterrent. Does anyone have feedback on running hardcast bullets through the G40? There is some reading out there that the hardcast leaves excess lead residue specifically because of the the Glock Polygonal rifling and has caused accuracy and over pressure issues. It is usually resolved by purchasing an aftermarket barrel. Just curious of opinions from the Rokslide pros on here.

I was set on buying that Glock. Just couldn’t understand dropping another $200 or whatever it is on a new barrel.
I went with the Springfield XDM instead. Shoots anything you load in it. Very compatible in size and capacity. I think the trigger is much better than the Glock as well.

I have some hard casts I carry in a 29. I'm not gonna shoot enough of them to create an issue. Although, I'm sure they are plenty more educated on me on the subject. If I ruin the barrel, I'll buy a new one at that point.

I’m not sure ruining the barrel us the only concern. It’s a possibility of an over pressure incident. It could mild or it could be ugly.

My thoughts exactly.

True hardcast in reasonable quantities is about zero concern from a stock glock barrel. That statement from glock is a result of soft lead bullets in high quantity creating high pressure that blows up. Hardcast with a gas check or hitek coated don’t leave much of anything in the barrel. I can shoot 30 or so rounds and maybe have one little smudge in the last third of the barrel on one groove, a shot or 2 of jacketed bullets and it’s clear again. To me it’s a non issue. Double Tap 200 shoots well for me and is about the best commercially available bullet loaded. Underwood is hotter but the bullet isn’t as ideal and with Hsrdcast the bullet shape or design trumps all other aspects. Buffalo Bore bullet is a poor design in my opinion for the intended purpose, there are far better bullets out there. 406 Ammunition is very close to the Double Tap bullet while being slightly less ideal. Haven’t messed with HSM bear load bullet at all.

Be aware that a 6" barreled gun mounted higher up on your pack waistbelt can be a bit of a pain to draw and clear the holster depending on pack weight and shoulder flexibility. Can't go wrong with the Ivory holster though, Gabriel makes a nice product.

I carry a Glock 20 around, I actually have 3 of them. 2 of mine have KKM barrels in them, I’ve shot at least 500 rounds of different hard cast Ammo out of each of them to test on stuff and check for reliability, they have never had the slightest hiccup with any sort of Ammo.

well actually, before I got the KKM barrel, I had a lone wolf barrel that caused all sorts of problems, it was a piece of junk and the numb nuts at lone wolf were like “oh send it back, it’s an easy fix”.....well if it’s such an easy fix then why aren’t you fixing it before sending them out??? I got my $$$ back and got the KKM, zero problems since.

I’ve shot everything from those guns, Underwood, double tap (always has far lower real world velocities than advertised) buffalo bore, HSM, thousands of rounds of sig Sauer and blazer Ammo.

Shoot whatever through it, just clean it when changing from jacketed to lead or vice versa. My stock barrel on the Gen 3 20 got fouled quick. I put a lone wolf on it and didn’t have issues, sample size of 1 though. Sadly someone decided they needed it more than I did and stole it. I replaced it with a XDm. One thing I would recommend is upgrading your recoil spring. My stock one was not strong enough when running the high pressure loads. My slide was slapping the frame. Went to a 18# spring and it was enough for the high pressure loads but I could still reliably run the bulk stuff (stuff loaded to .40 short and weak or worse).

CO-A.J,
I shoot, hunt, carry and reload for some different Glock 10mm’s. I am a bit of a 10mm looney and reload about 500rounds/month for testing in a various guns Glocks and others. I have tried a lot of configurations for reliability and accuracy as I have the luxury of an at home shooting range. Even though I have a custom 29, gen4 20, and 40, I find the gen 3 20 is still my favorite for your same application (western bear county). I have found the hard cast works fine in any well-manufactured barrel. Lonewolf has been hit/miss for me. The original Storm Lake dimensions were fantastic (have changed a bit), and KKM is what I now use exclusively. If you are just going to use factory ammo, the stock barrel will be fine. The issue more than gumming up the barrel is deforming brass. I do a trigger job and 3-dot night sights for each Glock. I also put a barrel in each one, but that is mainly because of brass and my OCD about accuracy.

Any Glock you choose will be great, accurate, and reliable. The 40 may be a bit long for your listed use when you are moving, crawling, or scrambling to stalk/find game. If you are going to handload, it may be worth while to dive into the custom “stuff” a bit more. I prefer a 200 grain Hardcast and Montana Bullet Works makes a fantastic one as a component. I have used mine (Glocks w/hard casts) to take 1-shot kills on a few deer and they have worked perfectly.

Years ago I bought a Glock 10mm, did all of the research, and bought a stronger recoil spring like you recommended. I just switched back to the stock spring because the new spring will not stay in place. After I work the slide and open it back up the spring has slipped off where it is supposed to rest. I was going to shoot some underwood ammo with the stock spring and see how it works.

Be interested in hearing more about accuracy improvement with addition of KKM barrel. Any before and after groups or data? Which MTB slug did you run on your 1 shot kills?

What kind of velocity differences do you get between the 20 and 40? I too am a Glock fan because they work. I have a G21 and a G19. The 21 is pretty old and doesn't get shot much anymore, the 19 is my EDC gun. The intent is last line of defense for anything I come upon on a trail. I suppose I could also drop a KKM barrel and a new recoil rod and spring into the 21 and run +P .45 ACP. Would save me having another caliber in the safe...

I mostly use the following bullet along with 180 XTP’s. I have had 1-shot kills with both and they were fairly quick. Like drop, kick a few seconds, dead. One went about 20 yards and was dead when I got to it.

I used a 6” Lone Wolf conversion Barrel/slide for a while, but it seemed unwieldy and I did not like it that much. The velocity does not really change that much for me between my G20 KKM and my 41 (.45 to 10mm conversionI am right around 1300 with the 200’s. I run an 22lb recoil spring over AA9 powder for the most part. I have run them hotter and slower I find the sweet spot for 180’s and 200’s is between 1200-1300...for me. I am not sure anything will notice the difference between 1150-1400. The muzzle flip grows exponentially with 220’s and/or hotter loads.

The accuracy is better with an after market barrel, but it is a matter of degree as I am not using a Ransom Rest. It’s over sandbags at 25 yards, and some days are better than others. My main reason is the way the after market barrels treat the brass and seem to be more consistent with velocity. I would say as a whole it’s 15% tighter with the after markets. I will also say that results vary by user and there are days when the factory barrels and after markets are Indistinguishable.

I spend a lot of time just tinkering with these things and have found when my buddies shoot them reactions and accuracy differs. It really will depend on what sights/grip/upper size is best for you. For me, right in the middle of L/XL hand size the Gen 3 Glock 20/old Storm Lake/3-dot trigicons is as good as it can get and I shoot it better than anything else. I am also not selling the others anytime soon.

I am using my phone so I apologize for any grammar issues.

Read well irregardless. I am not a large frame Glock fan and now run the big XDm. Quite pleased with it. Ran the G40MOS and couldn't find Happy. Wasn't willing to move to aftermarket barrel.

Think you're right on the money re: what dif is 1150-1350 really make?

Used a 180 XTP for a one shot kill on a buck two years ago. Same.....dropped and spun just a short time. Dropped another with 180 FMJ Sig factory. Was surprised it worked so well.

Think my AA9 charge is 13.7ish. Right in there at 1280ish.

I am not a fan of hard cast after a very botched debacle on a black bear. But I may try some of your recommended bullets for S&Gs. Be nice if they were a bit cheaper, but sure he has a lot of work casting and adding GCs.
