But I also think you may be setting yourself up for redundancy by chiming in on a 10 shot group advice thread if you already understand it, and reading it is tiresome.
True ;).

I was commenting to say why I sight in 2" high at 100 and got sidetracked.

Is now a good time to transition to mv vs bc adjustment for dope? ;)

Thanks all

I'm 2" exactly at 100...fired, measured, and then I verify drops out to 1200. Initial sight in after getting a load developed is done at 100 over about 20 rounds, I like doing this at a new poi for each group.

Not everyone on here is a variXII shooter who has no idea what they're doing. On average, I'll fire over 500 300wm (215's) and about the same in my 6.5-284 with 140'/156's a year, mostly from 600+. Way more with my .223. Yes, I know where my guns shoot. I don't need the "hornady beatdown" that's become so popular on this site. I know people are just trying to make sure everyone understands a true zero, cone of fire, etc, but it's just becoming a little tiresome. I think we should make a sticky at the the top of the forum "Sighting-in - Getting your Zero" just so we can start linking that just like we do with the scope testing threads when one of these threads comes up.

As far as why I sight in at 2" high at 100? I want as fast a solution as possible for that inside 300 yard shot. You've been on here long enough to have read the moa vs mil threads so I'm sure you know that mil shooters will tell you that mil is faster than moa...well, not having to twist a turret 0-300 is even faster. Farther than that will bring out the rangefinder and dial.
I hear ya. If that’s what works for you, I’ll zip it. FWIW, I twist my turrets up to an effective 150-300 yd field zero and leave it there based on the conditions I’m in. That way there’s no twisting in the field for most shots 300 and in. It’s just as fast as your method.

yes, that is another method as well. For me personally, I feel more comfortable when initially set at zero and don't have to worry as much about it accidentally getting moved. I know that's a small chance but there is a chance.

Update:

Grabbed real life BC from this forum, borrowed a chrono and got an average MV.

I pillar bedded the rifle.

Went out, maintained a 200yd zero, but shot from 100yds, a three shot group, with a good 5min break in between. Three holes touching. Adjusted for zero, and moved on to verify dope. I use iStrelok.

Did the same slow 3 shot groups at 300, 400, 500, 600. Went 11/12 on a 16” plate. Vertical was sub-moa the whole way. Changing winds (and my judgement) affected left/right, but still on steel.

Appreciate all the feedback.

We’ll done!

Except I think you might have lost the 100yd zero guys, when you said all those numbers that weren’t 100. 😆
