Every where in the state besides the southeast is at or above 100% precipitaion levels. Great for fed and head gear. Only downside is those Gila first archery tags aren't going to be able to sit water, too many options.
I've hunted in normal Quests in winter with gaitors and they worked well. Salomon Quests are what I run all the time. Love the boots. Only thing to consider in the winter is if you're doing a long glassing session in the snow you'll need to do something else to keep your feet warm. I usually...
Love trophyhill's post.
West of the 6s, what everyone is saying about less water is very true. NM has had a banner rainfall year so might not be as applicable as other years but still drier than high alpine CO. Anything longitudinally even with the 6's and north is a mixed bag. You can find any...
Only information I can provide is it's steeper and thicker than you'll expect. Suggest putting the elevation exaggerator about 1/3 the way up to give you a better representation on the land profile. Cliffy and thick unless you come in from the north part of the unit. With all the fires that go...
I live in 6C too. You won't need to worry about chains in late Oct. Chainsaw is always nice. Like everyone said above, USFS has most applicable data. Half the road lines on OnX are lies.
Replying to get on this tread.
From what I've heard, primarily bulls will not be with cows until the rut. In the pre-rut and before they will rub. Sounds like you're describing their prerut location and they had moved on.
Question for you seasoned vets.
I went scouting in CO this weekend and got into tons of elk in multiple areas throughout the unit. Got me excited about my eScouting abilities and my upcoming hunt.
My question is, should I expect significant elk behavior/location changes from early summer to...
Keep an eye on the current fires around the area. If rain is good this summer those spots will have solid feed.
Southern NM muzzy season is still in prime rut. Use more of an archery strategy than rifle strategy.
Most importantly don't cross into the Res while hunting. The Apache don't mess...
Decided I need to be more organized with my waypoints and area highlights in my maps. I currently use OnX primarily but do use GoHunt maps for some nuanced things they provided.
What strategies are people using for color coding waypoints?
I've used different colors for different species...
Love this thread.
I have my first archery elk tag for this September in CO. Appreciate all the advice.
One thing not mentioned here is learning how to play the tag game. Wasted 5 years not hunting elk because I only put in for resident NM tags. Finally decided I was going to be in the woods...
This is a very DIY-able hunt. You drew the hunt without the benefit of guided odds. Now use the guide money to buy some nice gear and a few bar bills to convince a buddy or two join.
