This checks out. I’m hunting private land in 13 4th rifle and the word has been that there are plenty of elk that never moved out. Hope for my sake it’s true but makes it even harder on guys right now who aren’t holding a permission slip for a ranch under 9k feet
Take it for what it’s worth. Lots of dead heads and complaining in FB groups for that area. Archers saying they’ve never heard it so quiet. Bulls still in velvet, no satellite bulls, etc.
I have a 4th rifle tag in 13 and I’m in agony waiting to see what’s there by thanksgiving
Also had my partner bail but up in 13. First elk hunt and going solo. Stay safe, have a communication device, leave plans of A/B/C with trusted folks, and be positive.. that’s my plan! Good luck!
Born in raised in the midwest ;) I'm a transplant.
Pittsburgh is no-mans land. Not the midwest. Not the North East. More like Appalachia than anything else.
Hey all, for those of you that like closure, I decided to go with 4th rifle!
All of the advice here is very appreciated. I was able to talk to groups who hunted the ranch the last couple years and had tons of opportunity and success in later seasons.
Still looking forward to an archery...
What's up guys. Feels like tinder for hunting buddies here so swipe accordingly....

Thank you all — the replies confirm that it is indeed a dilemma! There will be guys archery hunting all of September and I can get in the last week. Seems like I may be hunting pressured elk at that point.
Currently leaning rifle because of the shot opportunities. I’m very limited on time with...
Agreed the either sex tag is attractive. Since I’m flying in, as much as I’d love two tags in my pocket, I’d rather not try to get all that meat home. I’d have 5 days in either season
Thank you.. some good aspen groves and water holes. Really appreciate all the thought provoking conversation. Currently leaning archery because worst case, it should be beautiful
Whitetail? Archery. But that is largely due to weather and rutting. Also that’s treestand hunting and not spot+stalk. I feel like every wannabe elk hunter (*raises hand 🤚🏻) romanticizes bugling bulls. So maybe that’s a deciding factor
Boys girls and all others,
I have the opportunity to hunt a ranch (6-8k feet) in Colorado GMU13. This is solo and my first western hunt (a lot of whitetail in the Midwest). I’m confident with both a rifle and bow. Plan would be to camp during archery or motel in rifle.
I’ve scoured the...
