Something I haven't seen mentioned is that on the Midway factory seconds I bought, weight is super inconsistent. Probably 5-10% are under 108, 20% are between 108 and 108.8, and 5% are over 109.2 grains. Not complaining, they're seconds, but that's more variability than I ever saw with 106 or...
No, I've actually killed several animals with 108 ELDM's from 80-600+ and would take that terminal performance over most of the conventional and for sure monos/hard bonded bullets out of .308, 7mm-08, etc that I've seen and done, even if the 6mm wasn't easier to shoot well. No complaints or...
What actually is your position then, and do you have evidence you can show to support it? That's the whole point of this thread.
Some people say things like "I've had excellent results on game with the 108 ELDM," and others respond "just wait till you hit a shoulder knuckle or have to take a...
Y'know, those groups would be a whole lot prettier if you just focused on shooting off a bipod on a concrete bench and ditched all that "field position" nonsense.
Seriously though, very impressive!
Would you be willing to answer the questions I asked you?
I don't think you're against us, it's just a bit of shorthand for "those of us who have tried and really liked using small diameter but heavy for caliber rapidly fragmenting, usually tipped, match bullets such as the ELDM, TMK, and some...
Do you think a 77TMK at 2000 fps makes a larger or smaller wound channel than a 150 .308 FMJ at 2000 fps?
Do you think a 6mm 108 ELDM and a .30 225 ELDM are more similar at at equal energy or equal velocity (as in, gel blocks side by side with both bullets impacting with 2000 FPS, vs both...
Oof, poor kid. If that was my buddy I would probably bug him to the point of straining the friendship to look at the .223, 6mm, etc threads and try to convince him to not screw up his kid's shooting experience.
What is its usefulness to you? By the time you have enough other pieces of information (bullet construction and mass/speed) to do something with it, you already have much more specific information on what the wound characteristics will be.
Dude, I was so wrong about you. I thought you had better judgment than this. I don't know if I just missed it before, or if you've been hiding it all this time. I did not know you were an MOA guy.
Good shooting, sweet hunt, and great report! Thanks!
I have a bull 3" and a standard 3" and both on the 6 and 8 from shooter's ear I would have to be shooting them back to back, side by side on the same gun to tell the difference. Put them on different rifles, or just take one shot without having the other to compare to and no way I'd be able to...
What part of the argument do you disagree with though? What attribute of the wound channel of one of those good small bullets makes them "too small for the task"?
Do you think a sledgehammer is a more lethal fly killing tool than a flyswatter because it produces more damage?
That is the point...
Is that what you genuinely think we cult members are saying? Or are you trolling a bit, misrepresenting the argument on purpose for a bit of fun?
A flyswatter, a framing hammer, and a sledgehammer all will kill a fly dead. Sledgehammer does more damage than a flyswatter. Does that make it a...
Honest question for you, have you ever hunted with a rifle that allows you to see the location of your impact on the animal?
I didn't really appreciate it until I started shooting a suppressed, low recoiling rifle. The instant picture of what went wrong and the ability to quickly correct it and...
Never thought a steak and eggs meal would be economized by dialing up the steak and doing fewer eggs. We saw prices approach $1 per egg here for a while ($49.99 for 5 dozen was the one that make my eyes pop).
With 6 kids we use a couple dozen for a big breakfast.
My response would be, better men than me have spent a lot of time and energy tracking what *actually* happens on a large number of big game kills.
"I feel like it offers insurance" is where I used to be. Data that says "smaller cartridges correlate with lower time/distance to incapacitation...
How about Tikka .243AI, 18", lightest contour they can put ⅝x24 threads on?
Sorry, I'm late to the party. If that ends up being an option I'm halfway through my current (factory .243 rechambered) barrel's life and making plans for what to do when it's done.
Tikka in whatever version makes you excited is hard to beat. Lite/SS if you want a work horse, superlite if you like flutes, heavy barrel if that's your thing.
Suppress if at all possible, 18" or less for the can or 20-22" if you must do bare muzzle,, 1:8 twist.
I would describe that math as follows: a. 108 6mm berger hybrid and a 215 Berger hybrid that impact at the same 2400 fps, will have generally similar wound channels, both completely adequate to kill any elk in the world. The 215 might make a wound that's 7-8" wide instead of 6", and 24" long...
Wouldn't the flip side of this coin be, you're ignoring actual in-the-field successful terminal performance and improved hit rates because your interpretation of the physics involved tell you that there should be a benefit even if you can't demonstrate that it exists?
Where are you looking to land on the weight/size vs sound mitigation scale? For hunting, especially with the .308ish size cartridges, my AB Raptor 6 with the reflex mount has been really good. For the magnums, I would definitely look at the Raptor 8 with the reflex mount. Honestly though, your...
