Ain’t nobody confident when facing those brown bears unexpectedly. I’d venture to say you punch deep enough into the center of your island and even the distances and topography will have you questioning your decision making. Confidence is tempered yielding a functional skill set. Mess up...
Let’s talk about ATVing, personal use timber harvest, places to shoot, small scale mineral extraction, mushroom hunting, dog training, and trail hiking
Pretty much any fresh breath and sense of freedom we enjoy as regular workin stiff Americans hinges on public lands.
Fight this gentlemen...
What was their rationale for anticipated failure?
I'm also curious about the statement regarding AK being opposed to creating hunting opportunities?
Thank you
I've enjoyed the hunting afforded by the transplant of Deer on Kodiak, Mt. Goats on Revillagegedo and Baranof, and Elk on Etolin...
I'm 240 and have hauled solo goats and sheep. Any load will crush you. Break your pack weight down to a realistic weight where you can maintain stability. Then return for the rest. I like to go one hour of heavy hauling then drop the heavy and go light to the previous cache. Repeat till...
That is some lush habitat where he was hanging out. You can see all the way up the hill dense vegetation. He's thick and healthy too. Was that velvet still on in September?
I'll enjoy all the ups and downs. I get it. Getting out into those remote mountains with views of Denali can't be...
I'm hunting this unit again this year. Nice pics....love seeing the really big boys being harvested. I'll fly in Sept 2nd. Good luck to the other tag holders.
I agree. In close proximity to your hunt, put your boots on the ground and identify where the hoofs are. Learn your dominant wind, bedding locations, do some trail and access work. Try to get into the sweet spot unheard.
Dude, sounds like you just need to go in there when the season begins and hunt. Honestly, ya already got good intelligence that shows a huntable surplus population. The most difficult part is gonna be getting past those cows chillin with your spike. Figure out how you'll remain in the woods...
I'm already dialed in for my Moose and Caribou hunt. My partner and I have dialed in two different pilots. We had our flights partially paid by Feb 2025 with our locations on the map. The Caribou leg is 7 days and the Moose leg is 10 days. The complexity of a hunt like this are real and it...
Then there’s me… I’ve won that permit 10 times. Last time, fall of 24 I archery hunted it safely with. Covid. IDK…. Risks are risks
Once you embark on your challenge the penalty or reward are yours. Make good choices always.
Like even in the most minuscule moment mitigate risk. Focus and...
Well, I'm kinda on the fence about this....Say go hunt "The Misty Fiords" for Mt Goat. I respect any team that assaults that coastline. Good luck I say. Thats a whole lot different than say a sweet location in Unit 13 that is accessible via a specific ATV trail head. There's still areas...
LOL....I didn't read this entire thread but it cracks me up that one post on Rokslide gets more quality info and access to providers than a scheduled visit. I've been working in Healthcare for 23 years. I'm an imaging technologist, so no pill pushin or whatnots. I just provide high quality...
Fuel.......on a 17' and trying to get into remote bear country and back hauling sufficient gear for cold wet camping and travel is a real concern. At some point you'll need to seal your bear with F&G in Ketchikan, so there's no dodging town. You'll also be in a situation where you need to care...
DC826 and DL030 for me. I won a DM339 two years ago. Last year it was DE318. I move out of AK to Oregon. I also won DL 028 Kuprenof black bear. So since leaving I’ve been fortunate enough to return. I pay the non resident licensing and tag fee’s and go hunt. The DC 826 tag sure was a lucky...
Petzel 6 point instep crampons
Hiking poles
Use whatever rain gear you want
Use whatever pack you want
You hired a guide, you’re supported
When it really gets foul, ya need to be in a shelter anyways.
Cheers and don’t leave home without being strong mentally. The steepness and distances can...
Glad you made it out. Thanks for the post. Keeping those old bulls alive means keeping pressure down. There’s ways to move around those hills. There’s ways you don’t. I’ve won that permit 10 times now in one version or another. Sorry for your misfortune. For future travelers there… just...
Great story…. I watched the same thing happen to a big cow elk in that spot. I’ll be in there in 24. That country doesn’t play nice. Pick your footing carefully. I know you used some of my trail work. Your welcome😉
