I don’t want to be a downer, but no it can’t be fixed. At least not if you’re trying to get back to the 50’s 60’s 70’s era. That was a point in time where a whole lot of things coalesced to create a mule deer factory.
Here’s some of what it what it would take to get it back:
Fire. To reset...
I’m not a fan. I used to vote mostly republican, but now I’m firmly in the independent camp. I can’t stomach either major parties politics and agendas.
His stance on public lands, along with his proposal to reduce the ability of the judicial to be a check and a balance to the executive...
I worked for NRCS for 10 years.
EQIP is a great program that does a tremendous amount of good for farmers ranchers and wildlife.
CSP is one of the main reasons I left, in my opinion it is nothing more than a subsidy disguised as conservation.
I don’t know Wyoming desert hunting, but in Utah desert hunting is an exercise in dedication and putting in years figuring out an area.
My tips may not be applicable to Wyoming, but here’s what I have learned. Don’t be discouraged by lack of deer it only takes one. When scouting look for sign...
I’m not sure this even needs to be a debate on ethics. Hunters who make questionable decisions at long distances will continue to make questionable decisions at shorter distances.
It can potentially be a debate on opportunity. Western game animals are a limited and many times declining...
Threads like this help me keep perspective of what really matters, thanks for sharing and glad you got to make such great memories those last few years.
Cards aren’t getting hit until after draw results are posted, but you can log in and see you draw results under the letters tab on your application profile. At least mine showed up this afternoon
I thought the antler point restrictions didn’t pass the wildlife board?
I was also unaware of changes to the dates of any “general season” units.
In response to the OP, the Utah mule deer herd is struggling just like every where.
From pinion juniper encroachment, invasive annual grasses...
We had been single income since we had our first child up until 2 years ago when my wife started part time at the elementary where they go to school. Our oldest is twelve and youngest is 8. My wife is going full time next year, she really struggled in the decision, I reassured her multiple...
It would be interesting to know the current state of the population. I asked a habitat biologist this winter and he told me that he heard that harvest had actually slightly decreased. But that was second hand.
The 2024 harvest data should come out in March so it will be interesting to see.
I...
Following this thread as I’m curious if anyone has any repeatable methods or tips.
2017 I saw 4 cats while scouting/hunting deer and elk. All were random, and only one of them I think I could have gotten an opportunity at a shot. I also spent more time hunting and scouting that year than I...
At the ranges your limiting your shots too, you will be fine with the 120 nbt.
A close friend loads them extensively for his kids, they have taken mule deer, cow elk and a bull. He prefers it over the 140 due to the thicker jacket.
As to recoil, in my opinion the step down from 140 to 120...
I mainly use it in two ways, and both are early in my scouting.
One is e-scouting as I can get a decent idea by shades of green what plants might potentially be there, and if it’s worth checking out in person.
The other is just as I’m passing through country, I keep a mental log of places that...
There are two different types of mountain mahogany. This (pictured) is true leaf mountain mahogany, it looks similar to currant, and has a similar size and shape as a serviceberry bush, at least where I’m familiar with it in Southern Utah. As you mentioned the seed heads are the give away...
Great post/topic. Excited to give the podcast a listen.
I work in range management/restoration, I think something that gets lost a lot is that just because a place looks like “good deer habitat” doesn’t necessarily mean it is. It has to have the specific plants they need, when they need them...
I live in Southern Utah and was young at the time, but I remember that winter well because we shoveled snow off my grandfathers roof multiple times because he was worried it was going to cave in. It was really similar to the winter two years ago but the low elevation snow down here stuck...
Really enjoyed reading through this thread. I’ve been horseback all my life but mostly just for working cows and riding for fun/training.
The area I hunt, horses add more work than they offset, so other than packing out animals I generally don’t hunt off them.
Just a couple questions.

First buck, gave me the bug for life.
Grandpa was so excited he told me he’d pay half the shoulder mount if I got it mounted.
To this day, I still love a big 3x3
