    BLM historic maps?

Depending how big your 'general area' is, I might suggest calling the local BLM Field Office that manages that area and ask to speak with their Realty Specialist. They would be able to check any Township/Range/Section parcel for any record of an exchange or purchase. As mentioned above, if it...

Most expensive thing you lost while hunting

$280 Maui Jim Sunglasses a couple days ago while elk scouting. Just used the arms to 'clip' them on to a strap even through I was going through thick stuff. Dumb.

    Lifetime License

Oh, I agree and the Albany guy said that as well. I made that point to Helena, but that still wasn't good enough for them.

    Questions from an FNG

I would suggest spraying permethrin on your cloths, boots and cloth gear. Works on ticks, and Google claims it works on chiggers as well.

What states require 'back tags' to be worn?

When growing up in New York, all hunters were required to wear a "back tag" while hunting. It's an index-card-sized placard with your hunting license number on it that you displayed on your upper back. I believe they still require it. Any other states require this?

    Lifetime License

New York's Lifetime Hunting (includes deer and bear tags) and Fishing Combo is $765, if bought for ages 12-65. Add another $235 for the bowhunting endorsement. Can also add muzzleloader and trapping. When it was given to me back in '94, I'm remembering it was $500. Maybe?

    Lifetime License

My parents gave me one for my 21st Birthday. Lifetime fishing, small game, big game (and archery?) for New York. This was back in 1994, just a few years before I moved out West, were I've been ever since. It was one of the most memorable gifts I've ever been given, even though I don't use it...

Have you moved out of state?

Grew up in Buffalo, NY, finished undergraduate in Syracuse at the Forestry school. Went to Missoula, MT for grad school in '97 and knew within weeks I was never going back. Short stints in Salt Lake City and Salmon, ID starting my career. Been in Boise since '05. Why? Yes, public lands are a...

Best way to leave a vehicle parked for a week while hunting? Cheyenne

I've left my truck for a week at a rural county 's sheriff's office. Apparently enough others do to, because dispatch didn't seem to hesitate when I asked. They took some information from me and that was it. Secure and easy.

Idaho moose hunt: Pre or Post rut?

I drew an Idaho Unit 65 moose tag with a season running Aug. 30 - Nov. 23, but I am unable to hunt between Sept. 15 - Oct. 19 due to other obligations. Before and after that is fairly open and I can string a 8-10 day hunt on either end. And possibly... slightly shorter hunts on both ends, but...

    Creepy experiences in the backcountry

Bowhunting elk in Idaho, solo backpacking about 3 miles in, and I spent the late morning cow calling to a bull who wouldn’t budge from the thick timber across a draw. We called to each for about an hour before I decided to just back off and come back with a different approach in the afternoon...

    Elevated Trail Cam placement?

Thank you for the info Tyler! Have you, or anybody else reading this, used the Spy High system before?

    Elevated Trail Cam placement?

I've never used trails cams, but I've decided to use them in preparation for Sept. elk next year. My question to the group: does anybody install them high (8'-10'?) in a tree to avoid detection and tampering by people? I plan to place them near wallows and the country I hunt is fairly thick, so...

    Custom gear bag wishlist suggestions?

My wonderful girlfriend is very talented with her three sewing machines. Besides clothing, she makes gear bags, bike frame bags, and even her own down sleeping quilt/bag (looks identical to my Enlightened). For Christmas this year, she offered to make me some custom gear bags using dyneema, as...

WTB Kuiu Guide Jacket, med., hoodless, solid

Looking to buy a Kuiu Guide Jacket (the hoodless version) in a solid color other than black. Size Medium. By the time I fell in love with my camo version and decided to pick up one for everyday use, they discontinued them. Bummer. Thanks for looking!

    Hoodless raingear

Need help finding a quality hoodless rain jacket. I'm looking at the high-end hunting clothing brands, but everything looks hooded. Am I missing one? Also, I'm open to non-traditional hunting brands. For several years when I was salmon fishing in British Columbia I was using a kayak jacket...

Do's & Don'ts: starting over at the pro shop

Appreciate the input. 540 Virginian - yes, I plan on asking a lot of questions and listening. I like what I've read about Ashby, but I know not everybody subscribes to that. Maybe my first trip to the shop will just be a lot of talking at this point. And if it helps, my primary target will be...
