    Oregon or Idaho advice

Anyone that wants you to hunt the Eagle Caps after reading your criterion has another agenda, or they do not know the Eagle Caps. Probably both. The Eagle caps are not flat and killing a 300 inch bull next to a road is out. To be fair, killing a 300 class bull in Oregon on public land with a...

    (Eastern Oregon) More Bugle Questions

I have bow hunted eastern Oregon since 1993. The affects of calling has really changed over that time. It seems like now, you are more likely to call another hunter than an elk. I would recommend more strategic calling than was done in the past. Find elk if you can, then start calling...

Engineering a Better Broadhead for Elk

I edited my post above as correctly pointed out, the Black Hornet has an aluminum ferrule. I compared Bill's new broadhead with it as they look so similar. I am just getting used to $40 for a three pack of broadheads. It was just a short time ago I could buy a six pack of broadheads for...

Engineering a Better Broadhead for Elk

The Magnus Black Hornet which is highly rated, looks very much like the ones Bill V. engineered. They have .059 inch thick SS blades vs. the .062 inch blades on Bill V's broadhead. The Black Hornet has an aluminum ferrule. If hitting a 80# doe distorts the Black Hornet like it was stated...

Engineering a Better Broadhead for Elk

Bill, I mean you no personal offence. One time I said a fellow reminded me of the Sham Wow idiot with his fervent pitch on elk calling products. You remind me of a vacuum cleaner salesman. I have killed 23 elk, just from my tree stand, using broadheads. Sure broadheads get dulled in use. I...

Engineering a Better Broadhead for Elk

I am sometimes a naysayer to be sure, but it looks like we have a solution in search of a problem. There are a lot of good broadheads out there that are plenty for elk or moose. With all archery deer and elk shot, that I am familiar with, I cannot say a broadhead failure was ever a problem. I...

Would you feel underscoped with a 6x in elk country?

I do not know the terrain and vegetation you are hunting, but if I had to pick one fixed power to cover everything it would be 4X. I have never had more than a 3X-9X and prefer the 2X-7X, but keep it on 4X almost al of the time. Six power is a little better than four power in open country, but...

Removing dry skin from elk skull

I have used the kit that I purchased from Van Dykes. You start with hydrogen peroxide and water and boil it per instructions. Then cover it with a whitening paste before you mount the skull. You can get everything you need including the mount from Van Dykes. I don't remember the cost, but it...

    Diaphragm vs open reed

I use both the diaphragm and external reed calls. I always liked Sceery calls. I even have an old very small bugle they produced. I sure have never noticed I have to loud with an external reed call. It seems mine can be as soft as any.

    Diaphragm vs open reed

What Lang writes about addresses the versatility of a diaphragm. If you are one that gags with a diaphragm or are lousy with one, don't worry about it. There are good cow calls, and open reed bugles that you can tone down and they don't sound like plastic. Certainly it is as easy to put an...

    Diaphragm vs open reed

I probably will come off as a little jaded, likely because I am. Anyway my take on this is, if you are trying to impress elk calling elitists, the diaphragm is the only way to go. In addition the diaphragm is somewhat more versatile. If you are just using your bugle to call elk, both are up...

    Pack question

I was agreeing with Bulldawg all the way until I read his take on a $100 Cabelas pack. I like Cabelas a lot, but I don't want anymore of their freighter packs. If you are doing much packing get one that has a hard belt that distributes most of the weight to your hips. Those soft belts are not...

Pack elk out bone in or out?

I have field butchered elk bone in and bone out. I can find no difference in the texture or flavor of the meat. There is some of both in the freezer now. I have to look at the date on the package to know which is which. Sometimes I take a tarp with me to lay the meat on. If insects are...

Pack elk out bone in or out?

It depends on how much help I have and how far the pack out is. Age is becoming more of a factor now too. Like missjordan said a large front quarter is a good pack. A hind quarter is work. Throw in a couple of back-straps and it starts to get heavy.

new guy without a clue elk questions

I agree with the comment, "don't over think it". Sure elk often get pushed away from roads, but they still travel around and come out to roads. They are not always miles away. The claim about how hard elk hunting is, seems wrong to me. Most hunters would do better by slowing down and being a...

Opinions on getting into the Points game?

I do not know what your budget is and how much time you have for hunting, but if you get a tag from several States every 3-4 years, you can plan to be gone a lot some years. Watch out that you do not have to forgo good hunts, as the time available for each is too short to cover them all. I like...

Advice on archery elk hunting in NE Oregon

I have over 25 years experience hunting the Silvies. It is heavily roaded and heavily hunted. There are elk there for sure. I believe a tree stand is by far your best option. My advise would be to stay with the area you know and go for another unit you can hunt every 2-4 years on a draw...

    Oregon or Idaho advice

Probably the area I know of that comes closest to meeting those criterion is the high desert of eastern Oregon. Of coarse you may go a few weeks between sightings of elk. If you are willing to compromise just a little, then with a couple of points you can hunt the Ochoco unit. I am sure...

    Wallows, elk v cow

It has been my observation that elk will use wallows where cattle drink in eastern Oregon. If the cattle numbers get too high, the elk move out of the area after a short while. Elk will normally wait until the cattle leave a spring, but will come in right after. I know of elk grazing in the...

    Lifetime of elk hunting...

These old guys are great. What they reflect on is about the experience and the feelings they have for the hunts. The buck or bull is a foot note. The old videos on hunts are the same. Larry D. Jones and company, like others got one or two elk at the most, but they had a complete hunt...
