    2022 MULE DEER MEAT POLE

Last year I contributed to the meat pole thread with a little Nevada 3x3 that someone had wounded. This year opening day of California D3-5 I got another 3x3 contribution, but it’s a black tail. Sorry it’s sideways I suck at posting photos

    If you could move anywhere?

I’ve wanted to move to ID or Montana for a while but lately I’ve been thinking of going back home to northern New Mexico. Grew up just outside of ABQ but Taos has been tugging at me recently.

In your experience, where are the biggest, most rugged mountains?

MT Whitney should be on the list, it is the tallest in the lower 48 and goes from 4,000ft to 14,505 in a very short distance. Just not much to hunt up there. But for pure elevation gain, the most mountainous state in the union, Hawaii has em all beat. It’s not particularly steep but from Sea...

    A do it all backpack.

The Solo is 3,600. I have one and believe it’s perfect for day trips and 1 or 2 nights. But that may be different for you since where I hunt CA, ID, NV, is much different than AK. https://www.stoneglacier.com/collections/multi-day-packs/products/2022-solo

    Kifaru Feild Quiver

I have one. I like it, but they only have two loops, one at each end of the pocket, to separate your arrows. If you normally carry lots of arrows and like to have them separated into small groups (e.g., 2 to 4 arrows per group) it’s just not possible. That’s my biggest gripe but I like it much...

    California "premium" zones

Yup he is correct. The county does have that power and they do have a biologist. The Yuba County biologist was involved during the early comment period for a FERC project I was working on. His comments focused on deer habitat and fragmentation.

Wildest part of your state or province

I grew up just north of ABQ and have spent some time on Mt Taylor, but that was back in the late 80s and early 90s before I went off to college in Wisconsin. At that time there were supposed to be aoudad on Mt Taylor too. We never found them though. We did have success for aoudad down south near...

    Elk 101 AK hunt

It wasn’t? For the life of me I can’t figure out why I thought that it was. My bad.

    Elk 101 AK hunt

Cory had a pistol. Afognak is said to have some of the largest bears in the world. You should check out the two part podcast from meateater on Steve’s elk hunt on the island. I don’t remember the episode number but the title is Meat Tree. The second half of it is about their bear encounter.

    First stove for backpacking

I downsized my stove last year from a multi fuel stove to a pocket rocket. To be honest the only reason why I got a new stove was because I can’t find my old one. THe pocket rocket came with a 20oz pot, and cup (it’s an extremely little package). On 4 overnight trips and one power outage at home...

Mountain Lion Petition under California ESA

I read the proposal when I first came out and they are focusing on listing the populations along to southern coast range down into the LA region. Honestly Lions in that part of CA are in trouble. The rest of the CA lions are very healthy. I am not a geneticist but am a wildlife biologist and...

Does Rinella not allow a gun to be carried on his hunts?

In California If you are archery hunting for deer with an archery only tag it doesn’t matter if you are hunting during the general season, you can’t carry a firearm. If you are hunting for deer during the general season with a general season tag and decided to use a bow, you can carry a firearm...
