I spent a week this January in a Seek 16 man with the Big Mama stove. I also have a Kifaru 8 man and the 16 man is much harder to keep warm because of the height and added airspace (warm air travels upwards etc).
Lows were in the -10F range and I would run the stove constantly, but not at full...
For what it’s worth, I cross creeks with my OR gaiters and Lundhags boots (rubber lower, leather upper) and have never gotten wet. Boots are maybe 8” or 10” shaft. Don’t use rubber bands although I see the sense in that.
If you’re worried, take a big bucket of water and try it out at home...
Another perspective: I live in Finland and we've had similar legislation here since 1977 (can't carry a knife in public unless you can justify the need).
A couple of years ago someone told me about this law. Up to that point it had never even crossed my mind and I had never even heard of that...
I've been very satisfied with my Stone Glacier. They even made me a custom hip belt with my own dimensions. Always have replied super quick. Oh, and the Xcurve feels like it was made for me, that's how well it fits me.
I can't remember the last time a company would have treated me as well as SG.
I just recently got a Bravo stock and did have concerns about the added weight. Turns out I love that stock so much that I couldn't care less about the slight added weight!
They are popular, and have always been - but at the same time they do look pretty funny! 😃
Then again, the people that see me wearing them will laugh at me for many other things too! 🤔😅
The combo I use XC skiing in the woods is an Aclima woolnet long-sleeve shirt and Arcteryx Delta MX...
Fun facts:
-Varusteleka translates to ”Gear Hammer”
-Varuste translates simply to ”Gear”
-These two stores were located like 500 meters from each other for years, with pretty similar names, but no affiliation to each other
-first Varusteleka built a bigger building 3 kms away
-then Varuste built...
I would second the Singer 15-91. This thing will punch a hole on pretty much anything that fits under the presser foot. I also simply like tinkering with these old and simple machines. They are also pretty elegant object visually. :)
I have a Megamat 15 and I just love it. It’s in my van at all times and on winter camping trips with a pulk sled I bring it along. Sleep like a baby!
I thougt about 10 vs 15 and figured this will be my glamping pad so why not go all the way!
Basically if it got lost etc, I’d buy a new one...
I’ve never had any problems with the loft of my bag sleeping this way, even on week-long trips. With or without a wood stove for heating/drying things up.
I would say that the fear of losing loft in down bags is mainly just that, fear. At least that’s my experience anyway.
The fabrics used in...
When it's clearly freezing, I will just put my water in the bag. It will most likely freeze otherwise. I was just out for a week in 20F weather and had my water bottle on my hip belt. Took maybe two hours for the ice to start forming.
However, I have found that when you are melting snow into...
I backpack in the winter when it’s cold enough for water freezing easily. My winter bag is longer for storing water in the foot end. I also have electronics there in a small bag. Also any clothes, like socks and such, that I want to keep warm for the morning.
I’m 6’3” and I just bought a 7’ WM...
I will chime in also, the customer service I have gotten has been on a level of its own. They have always answered very quickly and I have always gotten the feeling that they genuinely want you to be happy and want to help you out. Best in the business!
Also, the Xcurve fits me just perfectly...
I was thinking of sewing liners for my Sawtooth but ended up buying them because I needed them quickly.
The liners are essentially just duplicate panels of the main shelter panels, with narrow webbing sewn in at the corners and along the sides. Liners are tied with the webbing to the shelter...
I bought the Megamat 15 Max for van camping and winter backcountry skiing trips with a pulk.
It is super awesome. If it broke today, I’d order a new one right away. Worth every penny.
I bought a Silky Gomtaro 300 (12” blade) replacement blade. As a test, I simply cut out the cardboard out of the plastic shrink wrap for a blade guard.
Wrapped the bare handle with some grippy and soft tape.
With the og packaging as blade guard, weighs less than 4oz.
With an actual plastic...
Looked into the reindeer herding a bit more. It seems like they spare the big bulls for breeding and about 75% of the harvested reindeer are calfs born in the same year.
This might explain why the reindeer meat over here always taste so good.
