I've had the luxury of packing a few shirts on my last few hunting trips and haven't noticed too much of an odor from either my Kuiu or FL merino, at least not to the point where it's unbearable. I don't expect the stuff to be scent free after a few days (which it isn't) in the field. I do...
LAHunter has some great advice. It really can be overwhelming and the variety of both species, terrain, and access can leave your head spinning. I'm a fellow flatlander and southerner, and I've done 8 elk hunts now in the last 6 years. I've hunted old-growth forests in northern Idaho, high...
I'm a similar size to you with a slightly smaller waist (closer to 34") and a little taller (5'9") but I wear a similar size dress shirt and suit jacket. I went with a L Uncompaghre Top, a L Boundary Stormtight jacket, and M Stormtight pants. They all offer a bit of room. I like the jackets...
Lots of great advice already on this thread. As someone who lives below sea-level but has a passion for hunting the west, I thought I'd give my two cents.
1. If the drive is in the neighborhood of 20 hours, I think it's far better to drive than to fly. I drive for the majority of my hunts...
Center the sight ring with the peep hands down. Like others have said, we didn't always have that luxury. I'm visiting my grandparents and they still have my first bow hanging up in the basement. This was a Christmas present over 20 years ago. Definitely no round housing on the sight!
Looks like there's already a petition...https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/demand-release-usmc-sgt-tahmooressi-suffering-ptsd-mexico-imprisonment/qslJk2Xd
I live in Louisiana, so I don't get the option of $100 elk hunts. When you are paying for an elk hunt (or a landowner tag), in my opinion you're paying for some combination of quantity and quality. There are units that hold less elk but hold some real monsters, and there are units that hold...
New Mexico is hands down my favorite state to apply in for a couple of reasons. 1) No bonus/preference points (you technically can draw any tag out there) 2) Three legitimate choices on your application (you can put two long shots and an easier to draw tag with your third choice).
I've lived the bulk of my life in Pennsylvania, Louisiana, and Florida...and never killed a big game animal in any of those states. My list looks like this:
Mule Deer -- CO, NM
Elk -- CO, ID
Bear -- ID
Whitetail Deer -- IL, KS
Hoping to add another CO elk, a WY pronghorn, and a NM elk to this...
20 months?? That's incredible! 20 years is quick for most people when it comes to the Super Slam! Considering hunting the Slam isn't really a year round sport (some species have extremely limited seasons), getting it done in less than two years has to be a huge logistical challenge! I'd love to...
For P&Y, B&C, and The Grand Slam club, I don't believe Kodiak and Brown Bears are any different. Sitka and Columbian blacktails are however treated as different species. The bear species on the Grand Slam are:
- Brown Bear
- Black Bear
- Grizzly Bear
- Polar Bear
That's not the way the AZ draw works. The sheep draw for non-residents is capped at 9 total tags period, regardless of unit. A unit needs at least two tags available for a non-resident to be considered for one of them (doesn't mean it goes to a NR). For a unit to give out two tags to NR, it...
I came to a slightly different conclusion than you after reading that. To me it seems like in general the bonus pass and the non-resident cap make it extremely difficult to draw tags and at best you are looking at odds that are less than 1% overall (and 0% for many units unless you have max...
Definitely not a bargain, but compared to the $40-75k for most sheep species and polar bear, I would call it relatively affordable! I'm sure everyone wishes it wasn't so expensive, but thanks to the laws of supply and demand it's pay the price or hunt something else.
From my research looking at various outfitters, Brown Bear and Grizzly hunts are running closer to $20k all in. Same with outfitted A-Y moose hunts. I'm sure there are some cheaper options out there but those prices are with reputable outfitters in quality areas. Tule elk are in the $15-20k...
You'd be surprised how relatively affordable Musk-ox, Bison, and Goat hunts are. Generally speaking, they can be had in the neighborhood of $10-15,000 each which is cheaper than brown bear, polar bear (which can't be imported back to the states), grizzly bear, tule elk, alaska-yukon moose, or...
For anyone that wants to read up on Jake's slam, here's the write-up. http://www.bowsite.com/BOWSITE/features/articles/jakes29/ He did it in 44 hunts and it cost him less than $500K. I'm sure there's some inflation from the prices he quoted but I wouldn't expect too much. I've been pretty...
Thanks guys! I was hoping to shave each state down to a sentence or two but some states it's just impossible too. At the end of the day I was trying to paint a picture as to how possible it was to draw. In certain states, like Arizona, even though there are tags that go into a random pool for...
I put this together to try and put together a "simple" explanation on these draws. As you see, there is nothing simple about how the draw works in many states. It can get really crazy when you start factoring in the resident vs. non-resident allocation (ie, Wyoming and Arizona) and special...
