    Iron sight options??

I have scopes on all but one of my hunting rifles. My Ruger #1 in 45-70 is topped with Skinner sights. Even with my old, worn-out eyes, the Skinners very accurate at 50 yards and are useable at 100 yards and maybe a bit further. They required very little "tweaking" once installed and IMHO are...

who uses a pillow and which one?

The Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow has worked really well for me. It is comfortable, packable and is never left behind, even when I'm trying to conserve pack weight. I use it with three different sleeping bags and it is an important piece of gear whether hunting and camping.

    First Lite Outerwear help

Western hunting, especially in the mountains can be hard on clothing. I got a 2" tear in the butt of my Kanabs on our 1st rifle season CO elk hunt this year. They made it 2 elk seasons in CO and 1 deer season in OK. It is time to either patch or retire them. I wish they would have lasted a...

Asolo or Salomon for elk hunting

I'd like to try the Asolo fugitives but my Sasslongs are still going strong and are on their 4th season. Asolo's and Kennetreks have served me well.

    How many mountain house meals?

For the past 5 or 6 years, my hunting buddy and I have relied on MH meals. Some are good and some are pretty bad. I don't think I have ever been able to eat a whole meal but they do fill me up and I've made it through several hunts without loosing much weight. A couple of the MH meals I've...

    Partner bailed, now what?

30 miles in 2 days climbing over deadfall….I would have bailed as well. But then again, I'm 64 years old. Six to eight miles a day is my max. This year I will be using a lighter pack, slowing down, and spending more time glassing, rather than climbing and hiking aimlessly. Altitude will be...

    Anyone use a tenzing tc1500?

I have a Eberlestock J34, a Kifaru Longhunter and several other packs but, I wanted something smaller and lighter for a day pack. I have tried 4 different day packs before I finally found the perfect pack (at least for me). It is a Tenzing TZ1250 lumbar pack. I have filled it with the same...

    Favorite pants

For warmer weather in temps down to around 30 degrees, I really like First Light Kanabs. For colder temps my favorites are Big Bill 8-Pointers which are great pants in snowy conditions. This combo worked well last year in CO 2nd rifle season.

    Another Which premium boot thread

My Mountain Extremes also run true to size. I wear a size 11 in all my hunting boots but, I do prefer to wear medium rather than heavy weight merino wool sock with the Kenetreks. I just find them more comfortable.

Turning 40 and my feet are still growing?????

I wore a 9.5 boot when I was 30 years old. I wore a 10's through my 40's to early 50's and I'm now at a 11+ in my mid-60s. Hell, I'll probably be wearing 12's by the time I'm 80. When do feet quit spreading out?

    Drying boots

Pull the insoles out, loosen the laces and try not to get them too close to heat, especially if they have rands. I have found that boot dry out nicely overnight on their own if they have been well treated and opened up to breathe. I really don't have a problem with boots, even if they are...

    Camping SetUp advice?

If hunting from a trailhead or in a drop camp set up by an outfitter, it is hard to beat a good "heated" wall tent. If going in by horseback, I've had great luck with my Seek Outside 6-man Tipi and a lightweight medium-size titanium stove. It can also be divided between two backpackers and...

    How far is too far?

At 64 yrs. old if I shot an elk 12 miles out, I'd have to start eating it somewhere between the 9th or 10th mile out. Even though I'm in good shape for my age, I now hunt with horses.

    Elk boots.

Kenetreks take a while to break in. My Mountain Extremes took over 50 miles of hiking/hunting before they were fully broken in. But it never kept me from wearing them on numerous elk hunts in CO. That was 3 years ago and they are still going strong and are now my most comfortable boot...

    Rain Gear on a budget

Don't overlook some of the cheaper gear. I have a LL Bean (lightweight, taped seams, packs in its own pocket) rain jacket that doesn't breathe worth a crap but, it has kept me dry for over 10 the years. For rain pants, I pair of TecH20 pants from Gander Mountain, of all places. This will be my...

    Supplements for high altitude?

Tums Antacid tablets. If you are sleeping above 11,000 ft. it wouldn't hurt having some Diamox handy.

    Asolo Moran Gtx replacement

I have the exact same problem with my Asolo Sasslongs. My favorite early season hunting boot and they too, are no longer available. Durable, lightweight, and one of the most comfortable boots that I have owned. My only hope is that they bring them out once again.

    Elk boots.

For CO, I would strongly recommend a pair of stiffer, leather boots with Gore-Tex or other waterproofing material and get a good pair of gaiters. I wear Kenetrek Mountain Extremes with 400 grams of insulation but boot fit and comfort are a personal thing. I always bring a 2nd pair of boots...

    insulated boot help

What terrain will you be hunting and in what temperature range? I hunt the mountains of CO and the flat lands OK and TX, in temps that range from just under 0 degrees to the 50's. Everybody has their favorites and mine are Kenetrek Mountain Extremes and Kenetrek Grizzly pac's when hunting in...

    Cow call

Last year I picked up a Bugling Bull Matriarch Cow Call but since we hunted the second rifle season I didn't use it much. It is easy to use and projects well. We are hunting the CO 1st rifle season this year and expect to use it more.
