I've seen a few dozen caribou, multiple moose and a grizz all go down with a .243 shooting Remington Core-lokts 90-100 grain. Every bullet I've recovered has been a perfect mushroom.
I read this thread in December and thought the same thing - 230lbs, would like to be 180 again, tired of feeling like crap. Laid a buddy low in January due to drinking, decided to get off the sauce for a while. Started eating right, working out at least 3 times a week, and NO booze. Also...
Its been a while and rules may of changed - but in 2008 I drove from Alaska back to Washington with about 200lbs of moose meat. The Canadians at the Alaskan border seemed to care less, the Americans at the Washington border simply wanted to see the harvest tag and the meat in coolers.
1998 Yamaha big bear 350 - finally lost the valve seals last year, just rebuilt the top end, still chugging.
2000 Honda Rancher 350 - 4800 miles, never had a issue with it except c/v boots, but that is my fault.
2013 Honda Foreman 500 - 3500 miles - and about 3000 of those are Alaskan alder and...
I've had an antlerless moose tag but shooting cows with calves was illegal. You could, however, shoot the calf. A two year old moose calf is almost the size of a cow so we took one a few years ago, every cut was so tender! We always hope if we get two antlerless tags in our family and come...
I got one off amazon that beeps first at the bark, then provides a vibration if they continue, then a shock if they keep at it. She is smarter than I thought as when it is on, she will bark 'lightly' to not trigger the sequence:LOL:
She also knows when it isn't on and will let em rip, pretty...
I always bring what I would need after getting mauled by a bear. Bloodclot, wound staple kit, large bandages/wraps. Skimp on weight to make up for it by leaving other comfort shit if you need to. Extra underwear/pillow/etc.
Not sure if its a draw area or even legal to hunt here but while on the south road system last October, we saw this guy right off the road with Kodiak proper in the back ground, lol. Just trudging around without a care in the world.
Alaska sheep hunt a few years ago. We walk back 22 miles and up over three different mountains looking for legal rams. Get up early on the third day and death march up a sizable mountain a few miles away that we had spotted a ram on, near dark, the night before. 3k feet plus of elevation...
Yeah its nice, but the unit I hunt requires taking the ribs out. It takes me 10-15 mins to yank the guts out - I just get em out of the way and the body is a lot easier to flop around - well, maybe easy isn't the right word for a moose :)
I'd go early if possible, get to base camp a few days before season start. Nothing would be sadder than making a plan and showing up on the 12th and seeing people walking out with horn on heavy packs and rams blown out of the country.
I have been in the woods up here a long time, all over the state. In 40 years I can count the amount of wolves I have seen in the field on two hands and maybe a few toes, the chance to actually get a shot off on one hand. The only other animal I have seen less of in the field is a wolverine...
A tip: Moose gutting. A lot of people take a saw and split the brisket bone right up the middle in order to get the upper vitals out of the moose. My pops showed me when I was a kid how to take a Wyoming saw (or even a serrated cutco knife in a pinch at the cartilage joints) and start at the...
Here is a little 'result' data. My cousin put the stalk on a 7.5 foot grizz up here in AK. Lost it for a few mins in the terrain, it popped up at 50 yards facing him. He threw his gun up to the shoulder and the movement caught the bears eye. Bolt action .300 win, scope on 3 power. The second...
