What caused the Rokslide shift to smallest caliber and cartridges?

WKR: That truck is red. JG: nope, not even close. WKR: why do you think that? JG: Red is just a name for a certain wavelength of light. WKR: but why do you think that truck isn't red? JG: is an SUV even a truck? WKR: ok, that SUV is red. JG: How much yellow can there be before it's not red...

What caused the Rokslide shift to smallest caliber and cartridges?

I think part of where we're all coming from is that the in-kind kidding-but-not-really response would be, "well maybe you're just not smart enough to understand the arguments" and this place devolves into a 24HCF style cesspool. Rokslide has a different style/feel/vibe or whatever the cool...

What caliber would you start a hunter with?

Were you doing dummy drills (someone else loads a mag with a mix of live and dummy rounds)? It's really easy to develop a flinch that doesn't really show itself to the shooter or casual observer in live fire (except for frequent poor shots. Sometimes it shows itself as consistent larger groups...

    22 pistols

I haven't shot all the compact .22 pistols, but I'd take a MkIV or Buck mark over all the Glock, sig, etc pistols that are a .22lr version of 9mm carry guns (unless the express purpose was cheap low-recoil practice to transfer to a carry gun).

What caliber would you start a hunter with?

As the OP of the kids rifle manifesto thread, I cannot state this strongly enough... A .308 size case pushing 120-140 bullets (so that includes 6.5CM, 7mm-08) produces 14-17 ft lb recoil energy. A 100lb kid gets pushed around by that about like a 200lb man gets pushed around by an 8lb .300 win...

What caused the Rokslide shift to smallest caliber and cartridges?

In addition to that, I'd say a 10 round group is especially important for someone who only shoots say 40 rounds a year from a given rifle. Such a low round count will be much less likely to reveal issues in use that the 10 round group might show.

What caused the Rokslide shift to smallest caliber and cartridges?

Actual serious question... Have you ever done, say, 5 separate 2 shot "groups" (or 10 cold bore shots) on the same target with a heavier recoiling rifle, and the same with a .223? 10 shots same POA tells a much more complete story than 3, and if you spread it out it really tells what you can...

Does the 223/6mm for everything change when hunt cost $$$

It's the best way to keep the meat fresh. Don't kill it all the way!

What caused the Rokslide shift to smallest caliber and cartridges?

How do you know that you just haven't gotten one of those guys that recoil "doesn't bother"? Maybe that guy who shoots his .300WM just as well as his .223 for 3 shots , and that's 2 more than he'll ever need hunting is out there and you just haven't found him yet. Did you ever think of that? Didja?

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

I haven't used the 6.5 Grendel, but after killing some animals with both the .223/TMK and a 6mm ARC, I'd for sure do the ARC if I lived in a 6mm legal minimum state. The 108 ELDM is wonderful, and from what I've seen the 123 ELDM is just fine too within its velocity window. The Grendel case is...

What caused the Rokslide shift to smallest caliber and cartridges?

However long you need. I regularly shoot 1.1-1.2 MOA 10+ shot groups with my low-testosterone .243AI, in a single string. Not so radically different from your 7mm-08, really. Do you shoot your 7mmRM as well as your 7mm-08? I found my 7mmRM took longer to zero (15+ rounds to get a true cone is...

    Switching from minutes to mils

I switched from MOA to MRAD pretty recently (after last hunting season), and here's my takeaway so far... 1.7 mil at 450 is easier to remember than 5.75 MOA. I have AB ballistic solver in my RF, but if I'm on a different profile it's way easier to shoot with just a range and not a solution. I...

What caused the Rokslide shift to smallest caliber and cartridges?

Do you think recoil has no effect on performance/precision? Can you provide a 10-20 shot group from your .300WM? I've noticed substantial difference in group size between high and low recoiling rifles, especially in non-ideal, field type shooting positions.

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

Do you consider your position to be based on reason or on emotion? If reason, what is the evidence that has led you to this position? What evidence would it take to change your mind and cause you to view the .223 as an "all around big game cartridge"?

    Q&A Leupold Mark 4HD 2.5-10x42mm FFP TMR

Was that low right shot the first one? Looks like that group and the previous two are trending high right. If that's the real zero/cone, looks like that one round may be out of the cone? It would match the zero shift that settles back in that I've observed in leupold's before.

So there I was... Just made a perfect liver shot, when this MF'er with a goofy cowboy hat shot it in the leg, ran past me, and put his tag on it. Said we gotta bump him to keep that liver and leg blood flowing.

Ha! What an awesome first post! "Hey I'm new but I Rok harder than you chumps with 2000 posts whining about how you don't have your Rokstuff yet." I love it, welcome to the forum! And yes I'm one of those chumps who fiddle-farted around getting my order in, gonna be a while till I see mine.

What caused the Rokslide shift to smallest caliber and cartridges?

I have an analogy to express the counterargument to this. I'm a carpenter. CDX plywood sheathing and tyvek or similar water resistant barrier (house wrap) has been a standard accepted building envelope for decades. We know it works. If I want to try a new system (ZIP sheathing that has a...

What caused the Rokslide shift to smallest caliber and cartridges?

I think you're missing the point being made. How would he have figured that out if he won't try this particular combination that so many people have found to be so effective? I'd estimate that the .223 thread has 95% of people that have tried that combo have decided it works extremely well...

    Average Hunter Ignorance.

Agree. If a feller just had to implement some sort of restriction, I think rather than a yardage limit, it would make far more sense to mandate that when you pull the trigger on an animal, your tag is punched. Follow up shots are fine. But if you don't put that animal on the ground you're going...
