How do you travel (drive) with your gear?

I say trailer. Bring what you need. I do a trip to NY (from AZ) to hunt. 2500 mi one way. I do it in 2.5 days, each way. Two 1000 mi days and a part. Two nights in hotels. Guns come into hotel room with me. I try to park my trailer with the ramp up against something hard (tree, wall...

    The Cooler Thread........

We use a chest freezer ($75 on craigslist). We have a little suitcase generator we can fire up for 30 min to get the freezer chilling if need be. Then a combo of leaving it open at night to let air and cold air in when temps allow. Closed during warmest part of day. If we want to really...

    Emergency Gear in your Pack?

Tourniquet, quick clot, duct tape, Israeli bandage - stop any bleeding with these. Cotton balls soaked in Vaseline, matches, and lighter - can start a fire, if needed. Lifestraw and plastic bag - emergency water done easy. Sam splint and paracord - too light to not carry. Too valuable when...

    Leaving elk quarters overnight

Friggin’ meat bees.... I have lost more meat to those stupid things than anything else in AZ. Always skin and bag the meat before leaving. A couple of years ago, they ate thru my BOMB bags and ate 1/2 +/- of a back strap. Since then, I always make sure they come out first, with a HQ...

Long-ish Range Capable Factory Rifle Suggestions (7mm Rem Mag)

I recently bought a Browning HC LR (not McMillan) in 7mmRM. Did the tedious break-in: shoot/clean x 20 shots, shoot/clean 2 rds x 5, then shoot/clean 5 rds x 2. Clean, then shoot fouling shot. My 15 y.o. and I shot 5 rds at 200 yds using the crappy Wally World ammo and our group, combined...

    Puffy

I would look at Beyond Clothing in Seattle. They have sales that make their stuff affordable (do not pay retail for anything nowadays). I have the A7 cold weather in multicam (https://beyondclothing.com/products/a7-cold-jacket-multicam?variant=32446154080318). Bomb proof. Warmest jacket I...

    Hunting rig?

Still driving a 4th gen 4Runner I bought new (2006). What a great off road vehicle (with AndyMod 2.0). Love the turn radius, etc. Other than the usual tires/fluids, I had to replace a gas cap ($7 IIRC). 150,000 miles and counting. Still getting 24-26 mpg on highway, and 20 city. Recently...

    Booze flask?

Drop.com usually has the Vargo titanium flask on sale for $50 or so. Has its own silicone funnel for filling and pouring. Great flask, if $50 is in the budget.

Iso Good deal Merino socks lightweight

Drop.com also has some 3-packs of Fitsox in multiple lengths. Very nice, and wearing as good as my Darn Tough socks. I think they are $20 for 3-pack. Drop also had 3-packs of the Darn Tough socks recently. That is how I got into them cheap. Lifetime warranty, so will take to REI for...

Which of these cartridges should I take on my first elk hunt?

6.5 “man bun“ is just fine out to distances you will shoot to. Look into the 147gr ELD-M bullets, get proficient, and go kill an elk. Bullet placement over all else!

WTS Asolo Flame 9.5 15 miles

These are stiff, but I like them a lot for out here in AZ. I packed out three elk this past year, and two of them were in 20”+ of snow. My feet were damp at the end of each day, but without the snow, they would have been perfect. When going up steep grade with weight on my back, these dug in...

Who makes the best down insulated pant?

Outdoor Research Tradecraft pants. I just picked them up on sale for $130 shipped during OR's spring sale. Way better than my Kuiu down pants. They are warm!

    Cots for truck camping

I have some of the x-frame cots, but found this one for around $40. Put my insulated, self-inflating pad on top, and used a quilt for covers. Slept like a baby. It is flat, and does not make noise like the x-frames do. Biggest problem is that it is bulky to store.
