    Choosing a Dog

My wife wants me to look into Brittanys because she likes the size and thinks they will be a good fit for our family. I’ve never hunted waterfowl but I’d like to get into it and it’s very popular around here, so was leaning toward something that can retrieve ducks as well. Lots of folks have...

If you were going to buy binoculars for a group of children…

Yes! I think we’re lucky to live in an area with lots of outdoor rec opportunities, but unfortunately not everyone takes advantage of them. Lots of kids don’t work well strapped to a desk. I’m very grateful for this opportunity and I hope we see lots of benefit. Last my class took field trips...

If you were going to buy binoculars for a group of children…

That’s awesome man thank you! One of the things that sparked this program was we gave kids emotional screeners and identified high levels of need in almost every grade level. We threw this outdoor enrichment idea out there and my administration has been super supportive helping set up this...

If you were going to buy binoculars for a group of children…

What would you choose? I’m teaching an outdoor enrichment cohort of 5-7 grade students. This is a project based, interdisciplinary program and I’m their primary classroom teacher. I’m lucky enough to take them on field trips every day to work on projects and learn outdoors. I want to get a...

    Choosing a Dog

I don’t know if you meant for it to come out this way, but this perspective sounds a little elitist. I agree it’s a shame people aren’t hunting dogs that are meant for it. I’m north of the bay and sanoma in the redwood region. It’s not too hard to make an occasional trip down there but it’s...

    Choosing a Dog

I am in CA. Northern CA redwood region. It looks like NAVHDA has a Northern California branch centered in the Sacramento area. It’s about a 6 hours or so but I might be able to make it happen. I’m thinking the best time to get a dog would be early summer because I’m a teacher and I’ll have the...

    Choosing a Dog

$800 sounds like a good price either way. I’m really wondering if I’m stressing too much about genetics and lineage. It’d be a pet first and pointer second. I’m sure any appropriate breed from a sporting breeder would work.

    Choosing a Dog

My wife originally wanted a standard poodle. I knew people hunted with them occasionally, but didn’t know they were still considered good hunting dogs. Honestly the only reason I knew people hunted them was from that dove hunting episode of duck dynasty back in the day.

    Choosing a Dog

Maybe I need to adjust my expectations. I’m going to be honest the whole genetics component is very confusing to me. I still don’t know what to look for or what to ask. Every breeder I’ve looked at expounds great genetics. I saw a started English Setter online for $800 yesterday and they posted...

    Choosing a Dog

1k—1500 is what I was expecting for a puppy. I didn’t think a started dog would be so much more. That’s another idea, I’ll look into it, but I’m hesitant to get an older adult dog because I want it to be socialized with my family. Going back to the needs list, it has to be good with my kids.

    Choosing a Dog

Not planning for this year, just thinking more about dogs again because the season is close. I probably wouldn’t get one until early next year at the soonest. I’m considering a started dog because I’m worried I don’t have the time, experience, or local support to train a puppy from scratch...

    Choosing a Dog

Revisiting this because it’s nearly bird season and I still haven’t got a dog. Any recommendations on started dogs vs puppy?
