I can't stand even mid level hiking boots. I've been trying to like my Salomon GTX for the 5 months but can't ever foresee giving them the nod during hunting season. I'm in my mid 20s athletic, quick footed and don't have any ankle issues. Over the past 3 years I've ran Roclites and Salomon low...
I disagree that rubs are territorial. I've seen 370 inches bulls simply watch small 5's destroy trees within feet of their cows. Last year I sat 50 yards from the bull I was after for 2 hours just to watch him bugle in his bed and pay no attention to a 4 pt. and small 6 rip up trees all around...
My jacket has taken a beating this spring busting through all salix along the river and I've had zero issues. Last fall was my first season hunting with it and stayed dry through the heaviest of rain.
Here's my two cents... Leave the fly rod at home. You should pass your "free" time with trying to kill an elk. Most of the more experienced elk hunters on here cover less ground because they know their area intimately and have a good understanding of where the elk are and what they'll be doing...
BOW, Thanks for all the info and nice picture! Hopefully I'll be able to post up some pics of my own when I get back. My buddies dad has been sending pics of 25 to 30 birds cruising by the front porch so we might paint up like lawn gnomes and let them have it. At least there will be plenty to...
Heading out to my best friends vineyard in California this weekend to do a little turkey hunting. I've never been there or hunted anywhere like it. It's my understanding the birds roost in a string of trees on the far end of the property and basically mill around the vineyard all day. Shouldn't...
Unit 10 actually cant believe more people don't ask about it... I guess I was trying to relay a bit of advice and see how many others hunt units that aren't as popular because of elk density, public land access or low cow to bull ratio's but have figured out how to consistently take mature...
I'd be packing my bugle and cow calls for sure. I've bugled in elk third season. All it takes is one late cow to set them off and it will seem like late September again.
I always find it reassuring this time of year to see no one is inquiring about my elk unit. After a few years of cruising the forums it seems the same units get brought up over and over. With information so easily available, I'm keeping my fingers crossed no one spills the beans on some of the...
I’m sure many others are aware (jm1607), but I just stumbled upon the Winona pattern by Bob Fratzke and was shocked how closely Vias mirrors it. Not trying to hate on Kuiu just surprised my favorite pattern has been around for 35 years. The Knit Tree is licensed to sell Winona and they altered...
If you chose to make western hunting a LIFESTYLE yes it can get expensive. Can you kill an elk or muley in blue jeans, Walmart jacket and Subaru? Yup. Your bank statements are a clear indicator to what’s important in your life.
Like others have said weather in the mountains varies year to year. First rifle last year in the same part of the state was cold, lots of wind and a few inches of snow. I packed kuiu mid and heavy weight merino and super down zip t with a FL stormtight hard shell for upper. For bottoms FL...
It wasn't a car. The nearest road is three or four miles away. What's also interesting is there's an outfitter camp half a mile from where I found her.
