I'm working on finding components to put together a 77gr TMK load. I don't doubt that a .223 bullet that breaks up would kill better vs. the bonded SP.
But for 223 everyone is saying there is this one combo that works and everything else is marginal. And, I agree.
However, I've shot a good...
Went out tonight with the thermal for fallow deer and got one at 100y, then came across a pretty good sized red deer at 220y.
I was shooting 55gr Speer bonded SP.
For the fallow, it was a direct facing. Single shot to chest and it went down. Kicked a bit then expired.
Saw the red a few...
Hornady Superperformance 130SST or the ELDX 145 Precision Hunter are both outstanding factory loads for my 270. My handloads aren't any better and the performance of the 130SST is an honest 3155fps from my 22" barrel. Very accurate out to 800yards for me (farthest I've shot it). Give it a go.
Yeah I'm thinking my 6.5x55 swede with 140s is about 10-11lbs. With suppressor it's even nicer to shoot. I estimate suppressors take recoil down about 1/3rd.
Mate shoots 260 with 123 SSTs and has a little less recoil, but is going around 2900 fps. No deer will remain standing when hit with...
A 6.5CM is popular, cheap for practice, and won't smoke your barrel in under 1000 rounds as the PRC will.
If you don't have a lot of time to reload, I'd pick a calibre that you can find in a store that has reasonable selection. I'd also err on recoil less than 15 ft.lbs. Preferably 10 ft. lbs...
If you want to take the safest route, get the NF.
The scope evals are fine, but are extremely limited in sample size. Each NF scope is beat around individually and checked for zero shift before it is ever shipped. I don't think Maven is doing this level of QC that NF does on each scope. I don't...
I believe that leaving a rifle cocked is not going to put a set in a modern spring.
With that said, I sill store my rifles de-cocked. For bolt action only: I do this by dropping the mag, opening the bolt, and visually inspecting the chamber. Then, with bolt open and mag out, I hold back the...
Because I train at extended range regularly and know a bad trigger pull/position vs. a wind estimation error. Nobody here has ever missed a target due to a bad wind call or holding too much wind or too little?
This still doesn't help me understand that if wind is a factor (and it always is past...
I understand. But again just based on ballistics at distance even with 77gr I'm unlikely to make it my primary. My misses on hunts/targets are by and large related to wind error (especially beyond 400y). If I'm not bothered by recoil from the 6.5 or 270, why am I going to downgrade to much worse...
If that's the case, I'm definitely taking the 270 or 6.5x55 because I know they perform at range with far less wind deflection and drop. I also have no problem being accurate with them. So again, 223 isn't on the menu and it doesn't matter if it shoots 77gr or not. It simply does not match...
I understand the arguments. I'll maybe work up a load. I shoot piles of ELD-Ms and am well familiar with them in other calibres hunting.
But to the question that was asked: If I was on an expensive hunt, would 223 be the calibre I'd reach for in my gun case?
My answer is still probably not...
To state clearly, .223 is perhaps my favorite calibre. Easy to and cheap to shoot. Because it's easy and cheap to shoot you practice more. Practicing more virtually always trumps what calibre people pick.
I've laid down quite a few animals with .223 including a number of deer (mostly wallabies...
I bought a Tenmile but really disliked the reticle at lower powers (4-8x) where I spend most time shooting at hunting distances to about 600y and closer. The reticle was tiny at 3-4x with the bold stadia lines floating in the middle distracting and not really fast for my eyes. You had to kind...
That's the rub. My 270 is sending bullets out at 3155fps at the muzzle vs. my 6.5 which is about 2700. .223 I have not chrono but maybe about 2900-3000 out of a 16" barrel. The muzzle speed difference between the 270 and 6.5 though is significant at hunting ranges and I think a large reason why...
I hear you, but sourcing 77gr TMK in NZ is difficult now. I may try them. But also I should just state my experience is on culls we'll be out with guys shooting 223 and heavier calibres like 270 and I can see very clearly the animals go down harder/faster when hit with the 270 vs. 223. I say the...
I shoot shoulders deliberately with the 270 and they don't go anywhere when hit. Sometimes aim slightly in front of the leg to hit the hilar zone and they drop like a sack of potatoes. High shoulder shot same. Doesn't matter if I hit both lungs or one, they don't shrug it off.
My last fallow I...
