Yeah as soon as I saw 200 yards I knew the guy was just guessing for the sake of seeing his thoughts in print, but I feel we've all been there at some point in our lives. 200 yards you could use a 20ga slug LOL.
I settled on a 35 Whelen AI and figure 450 will be my max range at Iowa elevation...
Whichever shoots best in the gun I'm using while still offering the terminal performance i need at desired range. Anybody who limits themselves to one or the other is generally doing so because they refuse to view the topic objectively.
Copper seems to be the direction I go for large game. Lead...
Iowa resident here and if you want my honest opinion: Never pay a red-cent to deer hunt in this state. Deer hunting is too easy here to be worth paying an outfitter $5k. There's so much public land in Eastern Iowa and too many deer to hunt, no need to pay some do-nothing "outfitter" to hunt on...
I ended up just spending the money and buying a Tikka T3X light in 270 and ordered a 35 whelen AI barrel. Once I get everything put together it should be the improvement I was looking for over my 350 legend. I think a 200 grain Hammer bullet at 2900fps should be more than I'd ever need
I'm sure a 300 blk COULD kill an elk, but so could a Buick LeSabre. It doesn't mean that it's the best tool for the job.
Bring enough gun or don't waste your time
That superformance factory load is intriguing, I may have to buy them up at Scheels tomorrow. I wanted to build on a stainless tikka also, but the blued Tikka was $200 cheaper so it was too hard to justify going stainless when a blued .270 was under $700 out the door.
What model if Boyd's...
The guy who told me about it built his 200 hammer loads off of the barnes load data for the 200 TTSX. Hammers are a little faster due to reduced bearing surface. I figure practically if I can get anywhere around 2800 fps to shoot accurately I'll be good to 400 yards (1900 fps) and not worry...
I have no intention to use it as a long range gun, but 400 ish yards isn't long range, IMO. I have other rifles for western long range hunting.
As far as making gelatin I'll definitely be improvising. I'm all for experimentation, but at reasonable prices.
Yeah I was going to try to stay around 200 grains for deer. The hornady bullets are certainly appealing from a cost perspective. I might just have to reload a few down and see how the various bullets perform at lower velocities.
Allegedly the 35 Whelen will push 200 grain hammers up to 2900...
I'm building a 35 Whelen and I've been pouring over ballistics and downrange velocities for various hand loads to try and find the max range I can still get reliable expansion.
Perhaps I should have phrased it differently, beings velocity is the key factor in expansion. What velocities will...
I'm not interested in purchasing anything 7PRC at the moment. Great cartridge (from what I've seen), but I already have a 6.8 Western and reloading hardware that fills the same niche. Between the 170 EOL, 165 ABLR and various Hammer bullets I have everything I need for hunting. Target options...
Yeah, like 5 boxes total. I'm not dogging the 7PRC, it seems like a great cart, I'm dogging Hornady's ability to keep up with production. 6.5 and 300 PRCs both have severe shortages of components due to their popularity and they've been out for years
Slayed you say? I guess I'll just keep shooting my 6.8 Western while all the PRC stans wait two years with their rod in their hand for the 7pRc to become available.
