I use copper bullets, and am looking to downsize.
How small of caliber/cartridge does the small caliber crowd feel comfortable going on non fragmenting monolithic pills for deer /black bear ?
Please don’t tell me lead is better, TMK or bust. I get it, there’s a 5k post thread covering that.
These threads make me want to take up archery, but I’m sure there will be a “show me your slingshot kills” thread topping 1k posts by the time I get there.
Long story but I have arriving in the next week both a new Ruger made Marlin SBL and trapper models, but only will be keeping one depending on what I like better.
I would let one of them go for
my cost $1460 for the SBL or $1400 for the trapper. Again , NIB/ unfired.
Looks like the SBLs...
The fit was a bit too tight for layering underneath for me but if they made a xxl I would replace it. This is a much better value than the hunting brand options.
Depends on the activity but if you are very active the entire time a take your pick light base layer and a breathable fleece vest. Works just fine for busting Cattails in late season MN pheasant hunting.
A light bottom base layer over cabelas microtex pants.
If I am going to be sitting, that...
Used it this year down to 4 degrees as a layering piece.
Works gray if you stay active or don’t sweat much or both.
A synthetic is better if getting very sweaty then sitting for extended periods in very cold weather
Canceled the Kuiu order and bought this instead. TBD but looks like a much better value than the hunting brands. Wish I could get a lighter tone color tho.

In the market for a stainless rifle with a good stiff stock, trigger that can be made good, that isn’t ported and comes in at around 7 lbs without optics… I still hunt and a heavy rifle (which 7 lbs ain’t really) holds steadier offhand than a featherweight. Ideas under $2k?
Don’t care for...
Not to hijack but without a hands on it can be difficult to tell how much room there is while sitting on truck camping cots as an example or how much usable standing room there is with some of these heavily sloped (tipi or a-frame) shelters. Yeah they can fit x people on ground pads spooning or...
Prefer the 3 position or an unlocking 2 position.
I have had bolts open, luckily never cost me a deer. That said, my Montana 1999 has a less than positive 3 position safety that likes to work into the middle position, which is where I’ve had an open bolt.
If I recall correctly, the original...
I can’t speak to quality of construction (seam stitching etc) anymore but I really like Cabelas Microtex as a fabric. It is as tough or tougher than denim and dries much easier. I use them for lots of grouse and woodcock hunting in the thick stuff and haven’t had a hole in them.
