Saw this in the cycling news. First I’ve heard of it, but sounds like the tried and true waterproof materials will have to be reengineered in a way that does not rely on perflourinated compounds. That’s going to be back to the drawing board for most companies.

If the anti lead bullet guys knew about pfas it would blow their fricken minds.

If they get rid of these chemicals, which probably needs to happen though too late in most places, we are going to have to worry about more than raingear.

At a minimum, the wheel will have to reinvented with regards to DWR applications on fabrics that don’t hold moisture. The goretex and similar breathable membranes won’t function without a DWR application on the outer fabric. One would imagine that Gore is way ahead of the curve on new technologies and potentially welcome a ban since it puts them back in a position of exclusive technology. A company like Kuiu, though, could be a pickle if Gore won’t source to them and there is no solution for Toray, pertex or other types of membranes.

Who would have thought that Filson and T&K hunting gear, with their waxed cotton line (of ugly gaiters) were the “green” companies this whole time.
